Lyrics
What Would You Do
Read together: Numbers 23:19; Joshua 23:14; 2 Corinthians 1:18–22; John 14:1–3
Imagine someone told you, "Ask for anything—have it your way." Riches untold. Mansions and gold. Anything you want. This song opens with that scenario and asks the obvious question: What would you do?
But it quickly adds a more important one: Who can make such promises without compromise? Who could be found always full of truth, never ever telling any lies? Promises are only as good as the one who makes them. And human promises often fail.
The chorus answers: The only One I know is the only One who would ever go to a cross to die for you and me. His name is Jesus.
Read Numbers 23:19. "God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has He ever spoken and failed to act, or promised and not fulfilled?" People forget, change, or lie. God does not.
Read Joshua 23:14. As an old man near death, Joshua told Israel, "You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God made to you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled for you; not one has failed." Joshua had seen God's faithfulness over a lifetime, and he testified that God had kept every word.
Read 2 Corinthians 1:18–22. Paul says, "As surely as God is faithful… For all the promises of God are 'Yes' in Christ." Jesus is the fulfillment of every promise. And God has "put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come."
The third verse points to the greatest proof that Jesus keeps His word: There is no greater love ever to be found than when for another their life is laid down. If such a One hasn't proved He will do anything He has to do to save your soul… If Jesus was willing to die for us, we can trust Him with everything else.
The bridge is personal testimony: I'm telling you what can be, because, my friend, it's happened to me. The singer said yes to Jesus' promises one day and found them true.
The final chorus and tag turn to heaven. And here the song says something beautiful. The love of Jesus is worth more to me than riches untold, mansions, and streets of gold. The scenario at the beginning of the song—riches, mansions, gold—turns out to be a small thing compared to Jesus Himself. Going to see Jesus one day—that will make heaven all heaven needs to be.
Read John 14:1–3. Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you… I will come back and take you to be with Me, so that you also may be where I am." The best part of the promise is not the place. It is with Me.
If you are wondering whether you can trust Jesus, look at His track record. He has never broken a promise. And He promises forgiveness the moment we ask Him to come in.
A moment to respond: Read Joshua 23:14. Make a list of promises God has kept in your life. Then choose one promise from Scripture you need to hold onto right now and write it on a card. If you have never trusted Jesus, take Him at His word today.
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, You never lie, never change, and never fail to keep Your word. Every promise of God is "Yes" in You. Thank You for proving Your love by laying down Your life. We trust You. Thank You for forgiving every sin the moment we ask You in. And thank You that heaven will be heaven because we will be with You. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would trust the One whose promises never fail—and find that He is better than anything you could ever ask for.
