Lyrics

[Verse 1] I searched for joy—but for all I know— it can’t be found—least not that I could see— I looked for fame and fortune too—but noooo—it brought no joy to me I searched east and west, I searched north and south—I looked all around But everywhere I wandered, ohhhh—no real joy was to be found. Then I tried—to grab the brass ring—you know—power—fame—and a name But that ring was empty—and it just led me right back—to the same And when some happiness I found—along my way, it flickered for just a while Before like a candle—it blew out—right in the middle of a windstorm—so wild! [Pre-Chorus] Confused—I couldn’t figure it out—asked the wisest I knew All they said—here’s some things you could do But things don’t last—they just fade away fast I needed more in my every day To help me—get through—and on my way. [Chorus] Joy, joy, everlasting joy Not in the world, not in the noise What I needed—ohhhh I need Joy, joy, I finally see— Jesus is the joy I need in me Joy, joy, it won’t fade away Not like the things that come around—but don’t stay Ohhhh—I was lost—tied up and bound But now in Jesus, I am free—for His joy I finally found [Verse 2] I was searching—for everlasting truth Something real—lasting—and full of proof Where would it be, where could I go? Every road I’ve been on—left me empty, miserable—leading to where—I didn’t know. Then a quiet voice—from above “If you want joy, first find my love” My love is the joy you seek—it can’t be bought or achieved So I’ve found joy in Jesus—when His love and forgiveness—in me—I received!!! [Chorus] Joy, joy, everlasting joy Not in the world, not in the noise What I needed—ohhhh I need Joy, joy, I finally see— Jesus is the joy I need in me Joy, joy, it won’t fade away Not like the things that come around—but don’t stay Ohhhh—I was lost—tied up and bound But now in Jesus, I am free—for His joy I finally found. [Bridge] Salvation is a gift—just believe To know freedom—just believe and receive— We were lost, but now we’re found Ohhh—Jesus—He turns our lives around Then Heaven bound, with no more chains All Freedom now, and no more pains— What we been searching for all along Was in His love—oh so deep and strong [Tag / Outro] Sooooo—I was wrong—joy can be found But not in this world, not in any day— You can search everywhere, you’re looking the wrong way Jesus is the truth, the life, the way Jesus is Joy, joy, everlasting joy Only in Jesus, only in the Lord Joy, joy, now this I know He’s the only One—from which true joy will flow Joy everlasting… joy everlasting…all the more— In Jesus, joy everlasting…forevermore!

Joy

Read together: Ecclesiastes 2:1–11; John 15:9–11; Psalm 4:6–8; John 14:6

Where have you looked for joy? Most of us have tried several places. Success. Relationships. Money. A new house, a new job, a new experience. Some of those things bring real happiness for a while. But then, as this song puts it, the happiness flickers like a candle in a windstorm—and goes out.

The singer searched everywhere: east and west, north and south. Fame, fortune, power, a name for himself. That ring was empty, and it just led me right back to the same. He asked the wisest people he knew, and they gave him more things to do. But things don't last—they just fade away fast.

That is one of the oldest stories in the world. Read Ecclesiastes 2:1–11. The Teacher—traditionally understood to be Solomon—says he tested pleasure, laughter, and wine. He built houses, planted vineyards, collected silver and gold, gathered singers and every delight. "I denied myself nothing my eyes desired." And then his verdict: "When I surveyed all that my hands had accomplished… everything was futile, a pursuit of the wind." The richest, wisest man of his age reached the same conclusion as this song.

Why do these things fail to satisfy? Because we were made for something more. The things of this world are gifts, but they were never meant to be the source of our deepest joy.

The second verse describes the turning point: a quiet voice from above: "If you want joy, first find My love." That is exactly what Jesus taught. Read John 15:9–11. "As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Remain in My love… I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete." Notice the order. Jesus does not say, "Find joy, and then you'll find Me." He says, "Remain in My love," and then His joy fills us. Joy is not something we chase directly. It is the overflow of being loved by Jesus.

The song also says this love can't be bought or achieved. It is received. I've found joy in Jesus—when His love and forgiveness in me I received. That is why the bridge calls salvation a gift—just believe and receive. We cannot earn our way into joy any more than we can earn our way into heaven.

Read Psalm 4:6–8. David notes that many people ask, "Who can show us any good?" Then he prays, "You have filled my heart with more joy than when their grain and new wine abound." The joy God gives is greater than the joy of a full harvest. It does not depend on circumstances.

That does not mean Christians are always smiling. Joy in Jesus can coexist with sorrow, grief, and pain. But it is deeper than they are. It rests on a love that does not fade.

The song ends by naming Jesus as the truth, the life, the way—echoing John 14:6. If you have been searching for joy in every direction, perhaps you have been looking the wrong way. Turn to Jesus. Receive His love and forgiveness. The joy you have been searching for has been waiting in Him all along.

A moment to respond: Make a list of places you have looked for joy. Next to each one, write how long the happiness lasted. Then read John 15:9–11 and ask Jesus to help you remain in His love today. Choose one simple way to do that—time in His Word, prayer, or worship.

Let's pray: Lord Jesus, we have searched for joy in so many places that left us empty. Forgive us for chasing the wind. Thank You that Your love is the source of lasting joy, and that it cannot be bought or earned—only received. Fill us with Your joy until it is complete. For anyone still searching, turn them toward You today. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would stop searching for joy in places that fade and find it forever in the love of Jesus.
