Lyrics

Ohhh—in my life—I’ve run across many a situation— In some there was an easy path—and a few more—they took some calculation. But no matter what situation—I found myself in— I could usually find a way out— But one day—when it came to the situation of my sin— Well—-that’s when I began to doubt. The biggest problem in my situation— Was not thinking I was a candidate for salvation— I just couldn’t see— How anyone could see—how anyone could care enough about me— To pay a debt they did not owe— Just so forgiveness I would know. But ohhhhhh—that’s what Jesus did for me— That’s what He did—when He died for me on Mount Calvary. Ohhhhh—even though He could see—More than anyone about me could see— He still chose to be for me—a perfect sacrifice— He paid it all—when all I could pay—would never suffice. And although He has freed me from my sin— There’s now another situation I’m in— Ohhhh—how can I ever thank You Lord— How could anything I could ever do—allow for me to be able to afford— The highest praise—my endless honor and gratitude— My hands raised high enough—or exalt Your name—to the most highest altitude— Every worship song I could ever write or sing— Would fall flat—trying to worship—trying to lift enough praise—to my Savior and King. Sooooo—right now—I come before you and bow— I bow before You—so that right now—You can show me how— How to worship You in spirit and in truth—ohhh show me how someone like me— Can thank You—the risen one—for all You’ve done for me—and in Heaven—eternity. Lord—is it enough—to raise my hands above my head— Lord is it enough to live by Your words that I have read— Is it enough to sing Your praise through the night and all the day— Lord—is it enough to follow You each and every day? And the Lord said, “Love me—above anything and everything—put me before any other. Love thy neighbor as thyself—forgive and love all like a brother—and honor your father and mother— Keep every command I have given you— Visit and care for the widows and orphans just like I would do. And just as I have commanded all who believe— Go everywhere you can go Tell everyone you can tell— About My salvation they should receive How about Me they should know— So that when all is said and done—for their soul they can sing all is well! Ohhhh—it has all been well—since You came to live inside of me— For all eternity!!

My Salvation Situation

Read together: Psalm 116:12–19; Micah 6:6–8; Romans 12:1–2; James 1:27; Matthew 28:18–20

Most of us are pretty good at handling situations. A problem at work, a broken appliance, a tight budget—we calculate, plan, and usually find a way out. This song begins with that kind of confidence, and then it hits a wall: when it came to the situation of my sin, well, that's when I began to doubt.

The singer's problem was not only sin. It was disbelief that anyone could care: I just couldn't see how anyone could care enough about me to pay a debt they did not owe. Some of us know that feeling. We assume we are not a "candidate for salvation." Too ordinary, too broken, too far gone.

But that is exactly what Jesus did. Even though He could see more than anyone about me could see, He still chose to be for me a perfect sacrifice. Jesus saw everything—every sin, every motive—and He went to the cross anyway.

Then the song does something unusual. It describes a new situation: How can I ever thank You, Lord? Once we realize what Jesus has done, gratitude feels impossible to express. Hands raised high enough? Songs loud enough? It all seems to fall flat.

That question is ancient. Read Psalm 116:12–19. The psalmist, rescued from death, asks, "How can I repay the Lord for all His goodness to me?" His answer: "I will lift the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all His people." He does not pay God back. He receives more—lifting the cup of salvation—and then lives openly as God's grateful servant.

Read Micah 6:6–8. The prophet asks, "With what shall I come before the Lord? … Shall I offer thousands of rams?" And the answer: "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" God is not looking for impressive offerings. He wants a life.

That is what the song hears the Lord say. Love Me above anything. Love your neighbor as yourself. Forgive. Honor your father and mother. Keep My commands. Visit the widows and orphans. Read James 1:27. Pure religion is "to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." And then: Go everywhere you can go; tell everyone you can tell. Read Matthew 28:18–20. Jesus' final command was to make disciples of all nations.

Read Romans 12:1–2. In view of God's mercy, Paul says, offer your bodies as living sacrifices—this is your true and proper worship. Worship is not only what we sing. It is how we live, every day, in response to grace.

We should be clear: none of that earns salvation. The song's first half settled that—Jesus paid it all. Obedience is not payment. It is thanksgiving. And the song ends with the old hymn's words: it has all been well since You came to live inside of me.

If you are still in the first situation—doubting that anyone could care enough to save you—hear this: Jesus does. He saw everything and chose you anyway. Come to Him.

A moment to respond: Read Psalm 116:12–14. Write down one concrete way you will "say thank You" to Jesus with your life this week—visiting someone lonely, forgiving someone, telling someone about Him. Then do it.

Let's pray: Lord Jesus, You saw everything about us and still chose to be our perfect sacrifice. Thank You for paying a debt You did not owe. We cannot repay You, but we offer You our lives. Teach us to love You above everything, to love our neighbors, to care for the hurting, and to tell everyone about Your salvation. It is well with our souls because of You. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that your salvation would become a life of grateful worship—loving God, loving others, and telling everyone what Jesus has done.
