Lyrics

[Verse 1] In this life—we ask the Lord for many things We ask in His name—the King of Kings We ask for strength and might We ask for courage—with His protection and oversight We ask that those that come against us—meet defeat We ask Him to join us—every time we meet Ohhhh—we have a lot we want Him to do for us But He’s still God—and His ways are just. [Chorus] Oh Lord—when we ask for healing—we must accept what the Healer chooses to do. When we ask You to give—oh You must be the Giver—in us too! Lord—when we ask forgiveness for our sin—we must invite You in—so we can forgive others completely from within. And if we ask to be pleasing in Your sight— Ohhhh—with enemies and friends—we gotta make all things right. And Lord—when we ask for help along our way— When you move in—we gotta help even those beyond our help—every day. [Verse 2] Oh it’s easy to tell the Lord we need our daily bread Ohhhh—but it’s different—trying to live up to the things to each of us—He said. And it’s easy telling the Lord all the things He seems to get wrong— But then try to worship Him—ohhhh—there’s no victory in our song [Chorus] Oh Lord—when we ask for healing—we must accept what the Healer chooses to do. [Bridge] Maybe that’s why—He said—love each other as I’ve loved you. Maybe that’s what He meant—when He said, “Be faithful and to His word, be true.” And I’m thinking it’s what He meant, when He said, “Forgive and all will be forgiven of you—And never worship any other God before Him— And He didn’t just die for those who live just right—all are precious in His sight—and He died for me and you and exactly them!” [Chorus] Oh Lord—when we ask for healing—we must accept what the Healer chooses to do. [Tag] Lord—make in me—a whole lot more like You—and move in to stay. Lord—help me not to think of you for what you do—but who you are—teach me that today. And Lord—if in me—you choose anything to do— Help me oh Lord—to do it all in Your name—and give all the glory and honor—to You! Ohhh my Jesus—I give all honor and glory to You.

Make Me Like You

Read together: Romans 8:28–29; Luke 6:27–36; Matthew 5:23–24; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 2:20

Think about your prayers this past week. If you are like most of us, many of them were requests: strength, protection, healing, provision, help with a problem, victory over something standing in your way. None of that is wrong. Jesus taught us to ask. But this song notices something easy to miss: We have a lot we want Him to do for us—but He's still God, and His ways are just.

The chorus turns each request around and asks what it requires of us. When we ask for healing, we must accept what the Healer chooses to do. When we ask God to give, He must become the Giver in us too. When we ask forgiveness, we must let Him in so we can forgive others completely. When we ask to be pleasing in His sight, we have to make things right with enemies and friends. When we ask for help, we must become helpers—even to those who seem beyond help.

That is a searching way to pray. It moves us from treating God as a provider of services to asking Him to make us like Himself.

Read Romans 8:28–29. Paul's famous promise that God works all things together for good is followed by its purpose: those God foreknew, He predestined "to be conformed to the image of His Son." The "good" God is working toward is not merely our comfort. It is our likeness to Jesus. That is why He sometimes answers our requests differently than we expect. He is making us like His Son.

Read Luke 6:27–36. Jesus says, "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you." Then He gives the reason: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." It is easy to ask God to defeat our enemies. It is much harder to ask Him to help us love them. But that is what being like Him looks like.

Read Matthew 5:23–24. Jesus taught that if you are offering a gift at the altar and remember that someone has something against you, you should leave your gift, go and be reconciled, and then come back. Worship and relationships are connected. The song's second verse says it bluntly: It's easy telling the Lord all the things He seems to get wrong—but then try to worship Him—there's no victory in our song. A heart full of complaint and unresolved conflict struggles to worship.

The bridge gathers Jesus' commands: love one another as I have loved you; be faithful to His word; forgive. And then it adds a crucial reminder: He didn't just die for those who live just right—all are precious in His sight. Becoming like Jesus means seeing people the way He sees them, including the ones we would rather avoid.

How does this change happen? Not by trying harder in our own strength. Read 2 Corinthians 3:18. As we behold the glory of the Lord, we "are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." And Galatians 2:20: "I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." The tag prays exactly this: Lord, make in me a whole lot more like You—and move in to stay.

If you have never asked Jesus to move in, that is where this begins. He does not just help us become better people. He gives us new life and lives in us by His Spirit.

A moment to respond: Look back over your recent prayer requests. Choose one and ask, "What would it look like for God to answer this by making me more like Jesus?" Then pick one person—a friend or an enemy—and take one step to make things right or show them mercy this week.

Let's pray: Lord, we have asked You for many things. Today we ask for the one thing that matters most: make us like You. When we ask for forgiveness, make us forgiving. When we ask You to give, make us generous. When we ask for help, make us helpers. Move into our hearts to stay. Help us see You not for what You do, but for who You are, and give You all the glory. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that your prayers would grow from "Lord, do this for me" to "Lord, make me like You."
