Lyrics

[Chorus] Listen, oh listen for the sounds of Christmas ringing true Listen for the memories that each year become brand new. Sounds of Merry and Bright Sounds of hope and dawning light Sounds of Christmas and its cheer Sounds that only come—once a year. [Verse 1] Ohhhh—see the children at play Hear the bells ringing all day Hear Carolers sing Not a worry—about anything Ohhhh—listen for the sounds of Christmas—it’s drawing near— Listen—listen for Christmas—it only comes once a year. [Verse 2] But in a town far away—and so long ago A bright star told all—where they should go Not to find Christmas with its glorious sound— But for a new King—born on Christmas—a King without a crown. [Chorus] Listen, oh listen for the sounds of Christmas ringing true Listen for the memories that each year become brand new. Sounds of Merry and Bright Sounds of hope and dawning light Sounds of Christmas and its cheer Sounds that only come—once a year. [Verse 3] On that starry night—the Savior of the world was born A Savior the world would choose to leave unadorned. And though people came from near and far Following that heavenly star The only Christmas sounds were Angels singing up above And cattle lowing low—beneath Heaven’s glow. [Final Chorus] Listen, oh listen for the sounds of Christmas ringing true Listen for the memories that each year become brand new. Sounds of Merry and Bright Sounds of hope and dawning light Sounds of Christmas and its cheer Sounds that only come—once a year. [Spoken] But unto us a Savior was born. And they wrapped Him in swaddling clothes—and laid in a manger. And His name shall be called— Jesus! Jesus! For He shall save the world from their sins! [Tag] Ohhhh—listen for the sounds of Christmas ringing true Listen for the Savior who came to save me and you! Sounds of Merry and Bright Sounds of hope and dawning light Sounds of Christmas and its cheer The sounds of Christmas that can live in us—all throughout—the year!

Listen for the Sounds of Christmas

Read together: Luke 2:1–20; Micah 5:2; John 1:10–14; Matthew 2:1–11; Isaiah 9:6; Matthew 1:21; Luke 2:19

Christmas has its own soundtrack—bells, carols, laughter, wrapping paper, familiar songs on the radio. Those sounds are good gifts. But the first Christmas was remarkably quiet, and Scripture invites us to listen past the noise to what God actually said that night.

Read Luke 2:1–7 and Micah 5:2. Seven hundred years earlier, Micah had named the place: Bethlehem, small among the clans of Judah, would be the birthplace of the ruler whose origins are from of old. When the time came, there was no announcement in the town. Mary wrapped her firstborn Son in cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them. Read John 1:10–14. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us—unnoticed by almost everyone.

Read Luke 2:8–14. The only public sound that night was heard by shepherds in a field. An angel said, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord,” and suddenly a great company of the heavenly host was praising God: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.” Heaven was loud. Earth was mostly asleep. Read Matthew 2:1–11. Later, wise men followed a star from far away to worship a King who wore no crown—and when they found Him, they bowed down and opened their treasures.

Read Isaiah 9:6 and Matthew 1:21. The Child has a name, and the name tells us why He came: “You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” The heart of Christmas is not a feeling that visits once a year. It is a rescue that God began in a manger and finished at the cross and the empty tomb.

Read Luke 2:15–20. The shepherds hurried to see, then went back glorifying and praising God, and Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. This song asks us to listen for the sounds of Christmas. The truest sound is still the angel’s announcement—a Savior has been born to you—and it can echo in us long after the decorations come down.

A moment to respond: Read Luke 2:1–20 slowly this week, once out loud. Then set aside a few minutes of real quiet—no music, no screens—and thank God that the Savior came for you. Write down one way you can carry the good news of Jesus past December, and one person you can share it with this season.

Let's pray: Father, thank You for sending Your Son into a quiet stable on a starry night. Thank You that Jesus came to save us from our sins. In all the noise of this season, quiet our hearts enough to hear the angels’ good news again. Let it live in us and through us all year long. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would hear the true sound of Christmas—a Savior is born to you—and let it live in you all throughout the year.
