Lyrics
Do You Know Jesus
Read together: John 17:3; Matthew 7:21–23; Romans 3:10–12, 21–24; Luke 12:16–21; Philippians 3:7–10
There is a difference between knowing about someone and actually knowing them. You may know a great deal about a famous person—their birthday, their accomplishments, their quotes—without ever having met them. This song asks a question that cuts right to that difference: Do you know Jesus?
Many people know about Him. They grew up with Christmas carols and Easter services. They respect His teaching. They might call themselves Christians. But knowing Jesus personally is something else. Read John 17:3. On the night before His death, Jesus prayed, "Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent." Eternal life is not merely a destination after death. It is a relationship—knowing God through His Son.
Jesus also gave a sobering warning. Read Matthew 7:21–23. Some will say on the last day, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name and do many mighty works?" And He will say, "I never knew you." They had religious activity, but not a relationship. That is why the song's question matters so much.
The second verse presses further. You may be the worst of any kind—or someone who is always good. You may be the best neighbor or friend—but you've never considered life's end. Read Romans 3:10–12, 21–24. Paul says there is no one righteous, not even one. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. That includes the best neighbor and the worst offender. But Paul does not stop there. He says we are justified freely by God's grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Good people need a Savior as much as anyone. And the worst people are not beyond His reach.
The song's verse also asks, Have you considered your plan? Jesus once told a story about a man who did. Read Luke 12:16–21. A rich farmer had a bumper crop and planned to build bigger barns and relax for years. But God said, "You fool! This very night your soul will be required of you." The man had planned for everything except eternity.
That is the urgency in the song's bridge. You might convince yourself you'll deal with this another day… but no one knows when they will meet the Lord. We do not say this to manipulate anyone with fear. We say it because it is true, and because Jesus is gracious enough to invite you now. He's waiting, He's forgiving. He doesn't care if you are near or far.
And for those who already know Him, there is always more of Him to know. Read Philippians 3:7–10. Paul, after years of following Jesus, still wrote, "I want to know Christ." He counted everything else as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Him.
A moment to respond: Answer the song's question honestly: Do you know Jesus, or only about Him? If you have never trusted Him, tell Him now that you are a sinner who needs His grace, and ask Him to save you. If you know Him, ask yourself who in your life needs to hear this question—and pray for an opportunity to ask it gently.
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, there is no other name like Yours, no other story like Yours, and no other love like Yours. For anyone who knows about You but does not know You, open their eyes today. Draw them to come just as they are. And for those who know You, deepen our love and make us bold to invite others. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would not only know about Jesus, but know Him—and find in Him the eternal life He came to give.
