Lyrics
Let Jesus Write Your Story
Read together: Jeremiah 18:1–6; Proverbs 3:5–6; Proverbs 16:9; Isaiah 43:1–7, 18–19
Life can feel like a mountain stream. It rips and flows along its course, carrying us places we never planned to go. Sometimes through joy, sometimes through remorse. And if we are not careful, the current starts writing our life story for us. This song asks a simple, searching question: Why not let Jesus write your story?
Many people live with their story being written by others. A parent's expectations. A boss's demands. A friend's opinions. The pressure to perform. The second verse describes it well: Letting life and others along the way write your story—that's a hard way to live. Never knowing where it's going, always expected to give and give.
But God had a purpose for you before the current ever started pulling. Read Isaiah 43:1–7. "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine." And verse 7 says God's people were created for His glory. That is the song's point: God created us one and all for His glory. Your life is not an accident drifting downstream. It has an Author.
Read Jeremiah 18:1–6. God sent Jeremiah to watch a potter at his wheel. When the clay was marred in his hands, the potter did not throw it away. He reshaped it into another vessel, as seemed good to him. Then God said, "Like clay in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand." That is a picture of humility—we are the clay, not the potter. It is also a picture of hope. Marred clay can be made into something new.
The chorus says Jesus doesn't want one part, but the whole. We often want Jesus to edit a chapter or two—to fix a problem or cover a mistake—while we keep writing the rest. But He is not interested in being a consultant. He wants to be Lord. Let Jesus take control—not one part but the whole. And He takes control not to crush us, but because He loves every part of you, then takes it all and makes you brand new.
Read Proverbs 3:5–6. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." And Proverbs 16:9 adds, "A man's heart plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps." Following Jesus does not always mean you will know where the river goes next. As the third verse says, life's river never tells you which way it will flow. But with Jesus leading, you will always find solid ground where you can stand.
The bridge speaks to anyone who feels like no one cares or life has done them wrong. You just want to hear a different song. Read Isaiah 43:18–19. "Do not remember the former things… Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" God can begin a new chapter, even in the middle of a hard story.
If you have never let Jesus write your story, today can be page one. Come to Him, as the tag says, with every imperfection and scar. He died for you, and He will write a new story for His honor and glory.
A moment to respond: Take a sheet of paper and write at the top, "My story, written by Jesus." Underneath, list the areas of your life you have been writing yourself—career, relationships, future plans. Pray over each one, surrendering it to Him. Then read Proverbs 3:5–6 aloud.
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, we confess that we have let the current, other people, and our own plans write our stories. We hand You the pen. Take control—not one part, but the whole. Reshape what is marred. Lead us onto solid ground. Do a new thing in us, and write our lives for Your honor and glory. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would hand the pen to Jesus—and discover the story He has been longing to write with your life.
