Lyrics

**Intro Chorus** This is a song not everyone wants to sing Memories don’t always—happiness bring But it is a part of everyone’s story One day—each one is gonna stand glory No matter what you may believe Every single day—each of us are afforded— All of us will receive. For unto everyone—we are appointed a day that we will die— And on that day—on who—are you gonna rely? **Verse 1** So listen to my story— Take this walk with my Dad and me— Dad—he always led the way— Like most sons—I always wanted to go— But on this day—he walked a path— I never thought he would know. **Verse 2** There in the middle of nowhere He’d found an old graveyard— And for me—he had a story to share. Slowly walking around each grave— some sunken in—the ground about to cave— And just when I thought he was done— He lowered his foot down into one. This is a song I know not everyone can sing Memories don’t always—happiness bring. But it is a part of everyone’s story One day—each one is gonna stand glory No matter what you may believe Every day each one is afforded— All of us will receive. For unto everyone—we are appointed a day that we will die— And on that day—on who—are you gonna rely? **Verse 3** At that moment—I remembered the way I’d follow Dad as he plowed every day His footprints on each row I’d jump to land in each one—following wherever he’d go Now, his foot in a place I was afraid to land He turned and said, “Son, one day the Lord, our souls will demand.” “For each and every woman, child and man—We are all once appointed to die— Trust Daddy when I say— You can trust God’s promises and plan.” **Bridge** Dad always left a path—for the way I should go— He said a day would come—no way to know— But no reason to fear this or any other grave— For on Calvary—Jesus our souls did save! **Tag** That was a day so long ago Now Dad’s in heaven— Mom too—ohhhh—this I know. Dad, Mom and Jesus—showed me how to find my way— And I don’t worry about the last day— In everything I do— Trust in Jesus—and God’s word is still true. In this life—and later in death— God gives me—every single breath. God in his goodness—has the only plan— Made for every woman child and man. Salvation from above God’s unending love— And if no one ever showed you the way— This is the story—you should hear me say— God so loved you and me He sent his son to die on Calvary’s tree And whoever believe’s it was this way Will live forever—with Jesus one day. It’s a story made for you and me—trust Him with your heart— Ohhhh—He will never depart! For His is the kingdom—and the power— and the glory—forever and ever—Aaaaa-men!

Listen To My Story

Read together: Ecclesiastes 7:1–4; Psalm 23:4; 1 Corinthians 11:1; 2 Timothy 1:12; John 3:16–17

Few people enjoy walking through a graveyard. This song begins by admitting it: This is a song not everyone wants to sing. Memories don't always happiness bring. And then it tells a story that is both unusual and unforgettable.

A father and son walk together until they come to an old graveyard in the middle of nowhere. The father slowly walks around the graves—some sunken in, the ground about to cave. Then, just when the boy thinks they are done, his dad lowers his foot down into one. The son remembers following his father through plowed fields, jumping from footprint to footprint. Now his father's foot is in a place the boy was afraid to land. And his dad says, "Son, one day the Lord our souls will demand… We are all once appointed to die. Trust Daddy when I say—you can trust God's promises and plan."

We will not add anything to that memory. But we can see why it stayed with the son for a lifetime. It was a lesson in faith that only a father could teach.

Read Ecclesiastes 7:1–4. "It is better to go to a house of mourning than to a house of feasting, since death is the end of every man, and the living should take this to heart." That sounds gloomy, but it is actually wise. Facing the reality of death helps us live with clarity. The father in this song was not trying to frighten his son. He was preparing him.

What the father showed was this: a believer does not have to be afraid of the grave. Read Psalm 23:4. "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me." The father literally stepped into a grave to show his son that it held no terror for those who trust the Lord. The bridge says it: No reason to fear this or any other grave—for on Calvary, Jesus our souls did save.

The image of the boy following his father's footprints is a picture of discipleship. Read 1 Corinthians 11:1. Paul wrote, "Imitate me, as I imitate Christ." Children learn to follow Jesus by following the people who follow Him. Dad always left a path for the way I should go. That is a beautiful legacy. What path are you leaving for those who follow you?

The tag says the father and mother are now in heaven, and the son has no worry about the last day. Why? Because he knows whom he has believed. Read 2 Timothy 1:12. Paul wrote from prison, facing death: "I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day." Confidence in the face of death is not confidence in ourselves. It is confidence in Jesus.

And then the son passes the story on: If no one ever showed you the way, this is the story you should hear me say: God so loved you and me, He sent His Son to die on Calvary's tree. Read John 3:16–17. If you have never heard that story for yourself, hear it now. Trust Jesus, and you will not need to fear the grave either.

A moment to respond: Ask yourself honestly: Am I ready to face death? If not, read John 3:16–17 and trust Jesus today. If you are, think about who is following your footprints—children, grandchildren, friends—and take one step this week to show them the way to Jesus.

Let's pray: Lord, thank You for fathers, mothers, and faithful believers who showed us the way. Thank You that because of Calvary we do not have to fear the grave. Help us to leave a path for those who follow us. For anyone who has never heard the story of Your love, let them hear it today and trust Jesus with their whole heart. Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would face every grave without fear, because you know the One who conquered death—and that you would leave a path for others to follow.
