Jesus is not lost. The deeper question is why we are seeking Him.
Luke 2 records Jesus at twelve years old in Jerusalem. Mary and Joseph search anxiously, but Jesus knows exactly where He is and why He is there. His words point first to His unique relationship with the Father and to the divine necessity of His mission.
That scene also presses a personal question into our lives. We may begin seeking Jesus because of fear, need, curiosity, grief, guilt or desperation. Christ receives people who come in need, but He calls us beyond seeking only what He can give us. He calls us to know Him, trust Him, remain close to Him and join Him in the Father’s work.
The Father’s work is seen throughout Scripture in saving, redeeming, forgiving, restoring, reconciling, loving, comforting, correcting, calling and seeking the lost. The business of heaven is people.

Read Luke 2:41–52 slowly. Notice Jesus’ emphasis on “My Father” and the necessity of His mission. Then ask not only, “What do I need from Jesus?” but also, “Where is He working, and how can I join Him?”
