Majors and Minors

Election, foreknowledge and predestination are in the Bible, and they matter. But Peter wrote to hurting believers to point them first to the blood of Jesus Christ and the living hope of the resurrection. Keep the Gospel first.

The message

Salvation is the major. Keep the Gospel first.

Peter knew failure. He denied Jesus three times, and the risen Christ met him by the Sea of Galilee and restored him. That same Peter later wrote to believers who were hurting, discouraged and under pressure, and he opened his letter by reminding them what is true about God and about their salvation.

Election, foreknowledge and predestination are biblical truths, and they teach us about the sovereignty and wisdom of God. But they are not a substitute for the Gospel. Our salvation does not rest on what God knew. It rests on what God did: the blood of Jesus Christ, His one sufficient sacrifice at Calvary, and His resurrection from the dead.

The enemy cannot pull Jesus off the Cross or stop the cleansing power of His blood, so he tries to get believers and churches majoring on the minors. Church is not about our preferences. It is about meeting the One who died for us.

Read 1 Peter 1:1–3 all the way through, then John 21:15–19. Notice how Peter moves past the questions people argue about to the blood of Christ and the living hope of the resurrection.
