Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Before I ever spoke a word,
Before Your name I ever heard;
Before I took a breath,
You saw and knew me from birth to death.
You saw the roads I’d travel on,
You knew the battles lost and won,
And before my time began—Your hand was on me,
Whether or not I knew—or could see.

[Chorus]
You already knew the tears I’d cry,
You already knew the answers to my why;
You knew the valleys I’d walk through,
Every mountain I would climb too.
Long before the way I’d find,
I was already on Your mind.
All my days already known,
And through it all, You’ve never left me alone.
Come joy or sorrow, come what tomorrow brings,
You already know—and You hold everything.

[Verse 2]
In darkness I had lost my way,
Nights were darker than the brightest day.
But when I could hardly see Your face,
I never wandered outside Your grace.
And if I rise above the highest sky,
Or sink below where deepest valleys lie,
Wherever these two feet may stand,
I’m never farther than Your outstretched hand.

[Chorus]
You already knew the tears I’d cry,
You already knew the answers to my why;
You knew the valleys I’d walk through,
Every mountain I would climb too.
Long before the way I’d find,
I was already on Your mind.
All my days already known,
And through it all, You’ve never left me alone.
Come joy or sorrow, come what tomorrow brings,
You already know—and You hold everything.

[Verse 3]
Even before my mother knew my name,
You knew exactly why I came.
You formed me where no eye could see,
And left Your fingerprints on me.
Every heartbeat, every bone,
Was to You never hidden or unknown.
I wasn’t by chance, I wasn’t by fate—
You were there while I was made.

[Bridge]
You knew the beginning,
You know how it ends.
You knew every failure,
And still called me friend.

You knew every heartache,
You counted each tear.
And long before I called Your name,
You were already here.

[Breakdown]
Where could I run?
Where could I hide?
You’re there in the darkness,
You’re there in the light.

Where could I fall
Beyond what You knew?
There never was a moment, Lord,
That I was hidden from You.

[Final Chorus]
You already knew the tears I’d cry,
You already knew the answers to my why.
You knew the valleys I’d walk through,
Every mountain I would climb too.
Long before the way I’d find,
I was already on Your mind.
All my days already known,
And through it all, You’ve never left me alone.
Come joy or sorrow, come what tomorrow brings,
You already know—and You hold everything.

[Tag]
You knew me then,
You know me now.
You knew each why,
You knew each how.
Before I ever called to You,
Before I ever made it through—
You were there,
And You already knew.

[Quiet Final Line]
And knowing my everything, seeing my every day—
Oh, how grateful I will forever be:
You loved me anyway.

You Already Knew

Read together: Psalm 139; Psalm 56:8; 1 John 3:19–20; John 2:24–25

Have you ever wished someone truly knew you? Not just the version you show at work or church, but the real you—your fears, failures, and private struggles? And have you also been afraid of exactly that? Many of us long to be known and fear it at the same time.

This song is built on one of the most personal chapters in the Bible. Read Psalm 139. David marvels that God knows when he sits and when he rises, knows his thoughts from afar, and knows every word before it is on his tongue. "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain." He asks where he could go from God's Spirit—to the heavens, the depths, the far side of the sea—and finds that God is there. He praises God for forming him in his mother's womb: "I am fearfully and wonderfully made." And he says, "All my days were written in Your book before one of them came to be."

The song turns that psalm into a personal testimony. Before I ever spoke a word… You saw and knew me from birth to death… You already knew the tears I'd cry, You already knew the answers to my why.

That last line is important. Many of us live with unanswered "why" questions—about suffering, loss, or the path our lives have taken. The song does not claim to know the answers. It finds comfort in the fact that God does. Read Psalm 56:8. "You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in Your bottle—are they not in Your book?" Not one tear has been wasted or forgotten. You counted each tear.

The bridge holds the song's most tender insight: You knew every failure, and still called me friend. That is what makes being fully known bearable. Human love often depends on not knowing everything. God's love does not. Read John 2:24–25. John says that Jesus "knew all people… He Himself knew what was in man." Jesus is never surprised by what is in our hearts. And yet He went to the cross for us.

Read 1 John 3:19–20. "This is how we will know that we belong to the truth, and how we will reassure our hearts before Him: Whenever our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and He knows all things." When our own hearts accuse us, God's knowledge does not lead to rejection for those who are in Christ. It leads to assurance. He knows the worst, and He still holds us.

The breakdown echoes Psalm 139's questions: Where could I run? Where could I hide?… There never was a moment, Lord, that I was hidden from You. For someone running from God, that is sobering. For someone who belongs to Him, it is deeply comforting.

And the song's final line may be its most beautiful: Knowing my everything, seeing my every day—oh, how grateful I will forever be: You loved me anyway.

If you have been hiding from God, you don't need to. He already knows. And if you have never trusted His love, know that the One who sees everything still invites you to come.

A moment to respond: Read Psalm 139:1–18 slowly. Then pray verses 23–24: "Search me, O God, and know my heart." Name one thing you have been trying to hide from God. Bring it to Him, and thank Him that He already knew—and loves you anyway.

Let's pray: Lord, You already knew. You knew our first breath and our last, every road and every tear, every failure and every why. Nothing about us is hidden from You. Thank You that knowing everything, You love us anyway. When our hearts condemn us, remind us that You are greater than our hearts. We are grateful to be fully known and fully loved. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would rest in being fully known by God—and amazed that, knowing everything, He loves you anyway.
