Lyrics
Why Does Jesus Care For Me So
Read together: Deuteronomy 7:6–8; Jeremiah 31:3; John 13:1; Romans 1:16
Some questions we will never fully answer in this life. This song names one of them: Why did Jesus care for me so? The singer could travel the whole world, see every nation's flag unfurled, and still not understand it. Why for my pardon would He hang on a tree at Calvary?… Why would the spotless Lamb of God care for me so?
That question is not a sign of weak faith. It is a sign of a heart that has begun to grasp the size of grace.
Scripture gives us a glimpse of an answer, though it is not the kind we might expect. Read Deuteronomy 7:6–8. God told Israel, "The Lord did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you." In other words, God loved them because He loved them. The reason was in Him, not in them.
That is humbling and comforting at the same time. Humbling, because we did nothing to earn it. Comforting, because if His love does not depend on our worthiness, our unworthiness cannot cancel it.
Read Jeremiah 31:3. "I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with loving devotion." God's love did not begin when we started to love Him. It is everlasting.
The third verse describes what that love did: Full of sin, He took me in. Eternal life for me He did win. He looked beyond my every fault. The battle for me He fought on Calvary. Jesus did not ignore our faults. He saw them clearly—and He went to the cross for them.
Read John 13:1. On the night before His death, John writes, "Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end." Jesus knew Judas would betray Him, Peter would deny Him, and the rest would scatter. He loved them to the end anyway. That is the kind of love the song is wondering about.
The bridge adds a note of power: From so long ago, on a hill so far away, the power from the cross still works today! Read Romans 1:16. Paul wrote, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes." The cross is not just a historical event. It continues to save, change, and free people today.
The song ends where many of us first learned the truth as children: And this is all I know—that Jesus loves me so! We may never understand why He cares. But we can know that He does. And sometimes that is enough.
If you have never received His love, the same Jesus who loved His disciples to the end is reaching out to you. You do not have to understand it to receive it.
A moment to respond: Read Deuteronomy 7:7–8 and Jeremiah 31:3. Then write your own version of the song's question: "Jesus, why do You care for me so?" Beneath it, write, "Because You love me." Spend a few minutes simply thanking Him for loving you, even when you can't understand why.
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, we will never fully understand why You care for us so. You looked beyond our faults, fought the battle for us at Calvary, and loved us to the end. Thank You that Your love depends on You, not on us. Thank You that the power of the cross still works today. This is all we know: You love us so. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that even if you never understand why Jesus loves you, you would never doubt that He does.
