Lyrics

[Verse 1] When I think of that city called Heaven When I think of the sights I’ll surely see When I think about being forgiven That God would save someone like me It may be an old, old story— But it’s my story I’ll tell—till I reach Glory [Chorus] When I get to Heaven—that’s where Jesus I’ll see When I get to Heaven—ohhh—that’s where I’ll forever be And when for me—they open Heaven’s door I’ll be in glory with Jesus—forevermore [Verse 2] They say there’ll be lots of sights to see And I know—Mom and Dad are looking for me And many others I’ve loved—who have gone on to Heaven before But for me—no one or nothing will compare—to seeing my Jesus—at Heaven’s door [Chorus] When I get to Heaven—that’s where Jesus I’ll see When I get to Heaven—ohhhh—that’s where I’ll forever be And when for me—they open Heaven’s door I’ll be in glory with Jesus—forevermore [Bridge] Now my friend—Heaven is gonna be a wonderful place But there’s only one way in—it’s by Jesus’s grace And forevermore in Heaven—is just that—it’s forevermore But if Heaven ain’t where you’ve arranged to be Forevermore in Hell is still an eternity. [Bridge 2] So come now to Jesus—come and humbly bow Come now to Jesus—come and you will know how To forever be with Jesus for eternity And Heaven forevermore is where you’ll be [Tag] When we all get to Heaven—it’s Jesus I wanna see When we all get to Heaven—with Jesus is where we’ll forever be When for you and me—they open Heaven’s door We’ll glory in the light of Jesus—forevermore Ohhhh— When for you and me—they open Heaven’s door We’ll glory in the light of Jesus—forevermore

When I Get to Heaven

Read together: John 14:1–6; Ephesians 2:4–9; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; Revelation 21:1–5; Revelation 22:3–5; Romans 10:9–13

Have you ever stood at a graveside and wondered what comes next? Or lain awake thinking about your own last breath? Most of us think about Heaven more than we admit—especially as the years go by and more of the people we love are already gone.

Read John 14:1–6. On the night before the Cross, Jesus did not hand His disciples a map of Heaven. He gave them Himself. He told them not to let their hearts be troubled, promised that He was going to prepare a place for them, and said He would come back and take them to be with Him. When Thomas asked how they could know the way, Jesus answered that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. Heaven is not first a place we reach. It is a Person we trust.

That is why grace must come before glory. Heaven is not a reward for good people. Read Ephesians 2:4–9. Paul says that God, rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our sins, and that we are saved by grace through faith—not by works, so that no one can boast. No one walks through Heaven’s door on their own record. Everyone who enters is a forgiven sinner.

For those who are grieving, Scripture gives real hope. Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18. Paul did not tell grieving believers to stop grieving; he told them not to grieve like people who have no hope. Those who die trusting Christ are not lost. God will bring them with Jesus, His people will be gathered together, and “so we will always be with the Lord.” The Bible does not answer every question we have about reunion, but it gives us enough to hold on to.

Still, the center of Heaven is not the reunion or the city. Read Revelation 21:1–5 and 22:3–5. God Himself will dwell with His people. He will wipe away every tear. Death, mourning, crying, and pain will be gone. And His servants will see His face. This song gets that exactly right: nothing will compare to seeing Jesus.

Scripture is just as clear that eternity has two destinations. Jesus spoke plainly about judgment (Matthew 25:46), not to drive people away but to call them home. If you are not sure where you will spend forever, the invitation is still open. Read Romans 10:9–13. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. You do not have to clean yourself up first. Come to Jesus, confess your need, and trust what He did for you on the Cross and in His resurrection.

A moment to respond: Read John 14:1–6 slowly this week and ask yourself honestly: is my hope of Heaven resting on Jesus, or on how good I have been? If you have trusted Him, thank Him for the place He is preparing and tell someone how He saved you. If you are not sure, settle it today—and reach out if you would like someone to pray with you.

Let's pray: Lord Jesus, thank You that Heaven is not something we earn but something You give. Thank You for going ahead to prepare a place for us, and for the hope we have for those who have gone before us in You. When we think of Heaven, keep our eyes on You. For anyone who is not ready, open their heart to come humbly and trust You today. And when for us they open Heaven’s door, let the first thing we see be Your face. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would long for Heaven most of all because Jesus is there—and that, by His grace, you would be sure you will be there with Him.
