Lyrics
All The Way To Heaven
Read together: Genesis 28:10–17; John 1:47–51; John 14:1–6; Ephesians 2:8–10; Psalm 51:17
People have always tried to build their way to God. In Genesis 11, men tried to build a tower whose top would reach the heavens. Today the effort usually looks more respectable: good behavior, religious effort, spiritual searching, or a lifetime of trying to be "good enough." But the question underneath is the same. How can I reach God?
This song answers with startling simplicity: there is no stairway to heaven—but He will carry you.
Interestingly, the Bible does tell of a stairway. Read Genesis 28:10–17. Jacob, running from the consequences of his own deceit, lay down in the wilderness with a stone for a pillow. He dreamed of a stairway set on earth with its top reaching heaven, and the Lord standing above it, making promises Jacob had done nothing to deserve. Jacob did not climb that stairway. God came down to meet him.
Now read John 1:47–51. Jesus told Nathanael that he would see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man. Jesus was saying something astonishing: He Himself is the stairway. He is the meeting place between heaven and earth. That is why He could later say, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).
The song describes the moment that changes everything: falling on your knees with your head bowed and a broken heart, crying, Please save me from my sins. Psalm 51:17 says a broken and contrite heart God will not despise. That is not a mountain you climb. It is a valley you finally stop running from. The way up begins with bowing down.
The second verse captures a feeling many new believers have: gratitude so deep you want to repay it. There's got to be something I can do. But the answer of the gospel is, Jesus paid it all. Read Ephesians 2:8–10. We are saved by grace through faith, not by works, so that no one can boast. Good works follow—God has prepared them for us to walk in—but they are the fruit of salvation, never the price of it. You cannot repay a gift. You can only receive it and live gratefully.
Maybe you have been searching for God for a long time. You have read, wondered, tried, and climbed. Here is good news: He has been seeking you. The song says God has been waiting just to speak with you. Jesus came "to seek and to save the lost" (Luke 19:10). The distance you could never cross, He crossed.
If you have never trusted Jesus, you can come to Him today. Admit that you cannot save yourself. Turn from your sin. Believe that Jesus died for you and rose again. Ask Him to be your Savior and Lord. He will not turn you away.
A moment to respond: Read John 14:1–6. Then write down one thing you have been relying on to "climb" toward God—your effort, your record, your religion. Hand it over to Jesus in prayer and thank Him that He carries you the whole way.
Let's pray: Father, thank You for sending Your only Son so that we would not have to climb to You. Jesus, You are the way. Forgive our sins and our self-reliance. For anyone searching tonight, let them find You, and let them know You have been seeking them all along. Carry us all the way home. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would stop climbing and start trusting—because Jesus has already made the way, and He will carry you all the way to heaven.
