Lyrics
The Lord Has Gone Before
Read together: Deuteronomy 31:6–8; Isaiah 52:12; Exodus 13:21–22; John 10:3–4; 2 Chronicles 20:15–17
Some nights are long. Some mountains are steep. Sometimes you cannot see the road ahead, and fear starts whispering lie after lie. This song speaks directly into that moment with a simple, powerful truth: I can know He's already walked ahead of me.
Read Deuteronomy 31:6–8. As Moses prepared to hand leadership to Joshua, he told the people, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you." Then he said to Joshua, "The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you… Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Joshua was about to lead a nation into unknown territory, against enemies he had not yet faced. God's promise was not that the road would be easy, but that He had already gone ahead.
That is the heart of this song's chorus: Look up! The Lord has already gone before you!
Read Exodus 13:21–22. As Israel left Egypt, the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. They never had to find the way alone. Isaiah 52:12 adds an even fuller picture: "The Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard." He goes ahead to lead, and He comes behind to protect.
The second verse makes a stunning claim: Before your enemies even knew your name, long before their attack ever came, Mercy—the mightiest Warrior—already trod the road. Grace already bore every load. God is never caught off guard. Before the diagnosis, the betrayal, or the crisis, He was already there.
Jesus describes Himself in a similar way. Read John 10:3–4. The good shepherd "calls his own sheep by name and leads them out… he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice." Jesus does not drive His sheep from behind. He leads from the front.
The song also says, He never sends you alone into that place where He Himself has not already gone through. That is profoundly true of Jesus. Whatever we face—temptation, rejection, suffering, even death—He has already walked through it. There is no valley He has not entered first.
The bridge declares: The battle's His—the victory too. Read 2 Chronicles 20:15–17. When a vast army came against Judah, King Jehoshaphat prayed, and God answered through a prophet: "Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's… You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the deliverance the Lord will give you." The next morning, the people went out singing praises—and God routed their enemies.
The song tells us to rise in faith—lift your voice like a sword. Praise is a weapon. It declares God's victory before we see it.
If you are facing a road you cannot see, look up. The Lord has gone before you. And if you have never trusted Him to lead you, He is calling you to follow.
A moment to respond: Name the "mountain" or "long night" you are facing. Then read Deuteronomy 31:8 aloud, putting your name in it: "The Lord Himself goes before you, ___." Write it on a card and carry it this week. When fear whispers, read it again.
Let's pray: Lord, the road ahead is sometimes dark and the mountains are steep. Thank You that You have already gone before us—ahead to lead and behind to guard. You knew every battle before it came. Help us look up and not fear. Teach us to lift our voices in praise, trusting that the battle is Yours and the victory too. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would face every unknown road with courage—because the Lord has already gone before you.
