Lyrics

Verse 1 The silence breaks, the heavens roll, The trumpets shake the dust of souls. The King of glory—tears open the sky Once clothed in shame, hung on a cross for us to die. Now the mountains bow, the oceans roar, The stars fall back from where they soar All eyes are raised, no place to hide, As Heaven’s Champion prepares to ride ## Chorus He’s coming—He’s coming—in victory With power—down from glory. The Lion and Lamb under one crown The King of Kings—is coming down Every knee bends to the ground Saints gather all around Every tongue confesses His name— Jesus Christ, who wore our shame. ## Verse 2 His eyes burning with righteous flame The universe—shouting His name His robe once dipped in scarlet stain From bearing our sin and pain Ohhhh—our mighty Savior and Lord Paying for all—what none could afford. Armies clothed in linen white, Behind Him ride in holy light. With just a word He breaks through with war, The victorious King forevermore. ## Chorus He’s coming in day or night With all power, glory and might. The Lion and the Lamb—under one crown The King of Kings—is coming down Every knee bends to the ground Every tongue confesses His name— Jesus Christ, who wore our shame. ## Bridge 1 Every tribe and tongue proclaim In mighty praise—Jesus’s name The dead in Christ rise from their grave Ohhh—Jesus—mighty defender—mighty to save Sin’s grip releases it’s hold, Saints clothed in linen—white and bold They’ve come to greet us—in the air, Rising to Heaven—to all live and forever worship Jesus there. ## Bridge 2 No more death and no more tears, Former things forgotten—no more fears In His presence—a city bathed in endless light, Death and Hell soon defeated by His power and might No need of sun or moon to shine. His face—the Lamp of God—so divine. ## Final Chorus He’s coming—ohhhh He’s coming—with power and with glory. Fulfilling every old story. Every heart sing His praise— “Holy, holy, holy— Forever Your matchless name we raise. He’s like a mighty rushing wind Putting all evil to an end Yet gentle to His own. Our King from His mighty throne. All Creation sings His name— Jesus Christ— Forever He will reign. ## Tag / Outro When the sky is torn and the trumpet sounds, We will see our Savior coming down. Lift your heads, redemption draws near— The King is here, the King is here.

The King Is Coming Down

Read together: John 19:1–5; Matthew 26:63–64; Revelation 5:5–6; Revelation 19:11–16

There is a striking contrast in this song's very first lines. The King of glory tears open the sky—once clothed in shame, hung on a cross for us to die. The One who returns in majesty is the same One who was once mocked, beaten, and crucified.

Read John 19:1–5. Pilate had Jesus flogged. The soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and pressed it onto His head. They put a purple robe on Him and mocked Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck Him in the face. Then Pilate brought Him out to the crowd and said, "Behold the man!" The King of glory stood there in a fake crown and a borrowed robe, covered in blood and spit.

Now read Revelation 19:11–16. John sees heaven opened and a rider on a white horse called Faithful and True. "His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on His head are many crowns… He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in fine linen, white and pure, follow Him." On His robe is written, "King of kings and Lord of lords."

Notice the robe. The song's second verse catches it: His robe once dipped in scarlet stain—from bearing our sin and pain. The mocked King in a purple robe returns as the true King in a robe dipped in blood. The same Jesus. The cross was not a detour from His kingship. It was the path to it.

At His trial, Jesus told the high priest exactly this would happen. Read Matthew 26:63–64. Asked under oath whether He was the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus answered, "You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven." The men judging Him will one day see Him judging the world.

The chorus holds two images together: The Lion and Lamb under one crown. Read Revelation 5:5–6. John was told to look at "the Lion of the tribe of Judah," who had triumphed. But when he looked, he saw "a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain." The Lion is the Lamb. Jesus conquers by sacrifice. His power is wedded to His mercy.

That is why the final chorus can say He is like a mighty rushing wind putting all evil to an end—yet gentle to His own. For those who have rejected Him, His coming will be terrifying. For those who belong to Him, it will be the arrival of the gentlest, most loving King imaginable—the One who already bled for them.

The bridges describe what His coming will bring: the dead in Christ rising, sin's grip released, no more death or tears, a city bathed in endless light where His face—the Lamp of God shines. And the tag gives believers their posture: Lift your heads, redemption draws near.

If you are not ready for that day, you can be. The King who is coming down first came down to die for you. Bow to Him now, while His mercy is offered freely.

A moment to respond: Read John 19:1–5 and Revelation 19:11–16 side by side. Notice the crowns and the robes. Then thank Jesus that the One who was mocked for you is the King who is coming for you. Ask Him to make you ready, and pray for someone who is not.

Let's pray: Lord Jesus, You were once clothed in shame and crowned with thorns, and You are coming again as King of kings. You are the Lion and the Lamb. Thank You for bearing our sin and pain. Make us ready for Your return. Let every knee bow and every tongue confess Your name—and let ours do so gladly now. Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would lift your head with hope—because the King who wore our shame is coming down in glory, and He is gentle to His own.
