Many people carry a quiet fear of death. It may not dominate their days, but it is there—at funerals, during a frightening diagnosis, or late at night. This song speaks to that fear with a startling claim: The fear of death will become the door.
For those who belong to Jesus, death is not a wall. It is a doorway. Read John 10:7–10. Jesus said, "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture… I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." Jesus Himself is the door into life with God. And because He has gone through death and come out the other side, death becomes, for His people, a passage rather than a prison.
Read Hebrews 2:14–15. Jesus shared in our flesh and blood "so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death." That is the heart of this song's chorus: Death's sting was defeated for all by the precious Lamb of God.
The chorus also says, The absence of our body—being found in the presence of the Lord—it is all true! Read 2 Corinthians 5:6–8. Paul says believers would prefer "to be away from the body and at home with the Lord." When a Christian dies, they are not lost in a void. They go home.
And the first verse adds, Never separated—no, not ever—anymore! Read Romans 8:38–39. Paul was convinced that neither death nor life, nor anything else in all creation, "will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Death separates us from many things—our bodies, our loved ones for a time, our earthly plans. But it cannot separate a believer from Christ.
But notice the important condition in the song: It is the pathway—if we are saved. The door is open, but it is entered through Jesus. That is why the second verse turns to an invitation. Won't you now see what Christ has done? Salvation's call is at your door. Don't turn Him away, not anymore. The song echoes the old hymn: Softly and tenderly He calls you—oh sinner, come home.
Read Matthew 11:28. "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Jesus does not shout threats at the door. He calls softly and tenderly. But He does call, and the invitation is meant to be answered.
The tag turns to celebration for those who have answered: If you've answered His call, you've become an accepted one. It's said and done. Don't worry where you'll be, for heaven now is promised. The believer's confidence is not arrogance. It is trust in what the precious Lamb has done.
If fear of death has a hold on you, bring it to Jesus. And if you have never answered His call, today the door is open.
A moment to respond: Read Hebrews 2:14–15 and Romans 8:38–39. Write down any fears you have about death—for yourself or for someone you love—and bring them to Jesus in prayer. If you have never answered His call, open the door today. If you have, thank Him that you will never be separated from His love.
Let's pray: Precious Lamb of God, thank You for defeating death's sting and setting us free from fear. Thank You that for those who trust You, death is a doorway into Your presence, and nothing can separate us from Your love. For anyone hearing You knock today, give them courage to open the door and come home. Hallelujah forevermore. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that the fear of death would lose its grip on you—because the precious Lamb has turned death into a door that opens into His presence.
