Lyrics
Turn My Eyes to Jesus
Read together: John 16:7–15; 2 Corinthians 3:14–16; 1 Corinthians 2:10–14; Romans 8:26–27
It is possible to know a great deal about Jesus without ever truly seeing Him. This song begins with that confession: There was a time I heard Your words, but somehow I never heard Your voice. I knew the stories and the songs, but still my heart made no choice.
Many people grow up in church in exactly that place. They know the Bible stories, sing the hymns, and could pass a test on the facts. But Jesus remains someone they know about rather than someone they know.
What changes that? The song answers: Like the wind I could not see, Your Spirit came and awakened me. This is a song addressed to the Holy Spirit—and it understands His role beautifully.
Read John 16:7–15. On the night before His death, Jesus told His disciples it was better for them that He go away, because then the Helper would come. The Spirit would convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and guide believers into all truth. Then Jesus said, "He will glorify Me, for He will take what is Mine and declare it to you." The Spirit's great work is to point to Jesus. The song's second verse captures this: You never came to lift Yourself—You came to glorify the Son.
Read 2 Corinthians 3:14–16. Paul says that when many people read the Scriptures, "a veil lies over their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away." The song describes that exact moment: You took the veil away, You turned night to day. Suddenly the One I only knew about was standing in my way.
Read 1 Corinthians 2:10–14. Paul explains that "the natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned." We need the Spirit to open our eyes. That is why the chorus prays, Holy Spirit, make my dead heart beat. Make these blinded eyes finally see. Don't let me only know about Him—make Jesus everything to me.
The third verse describes the Spirit's ongoing work in a believer's life: leading us home when tempted, making us strong when frightened, reminding us whose child we are. When words won't come and prayers run dry… intercede when I can't speak. Read Romans 8:26–27. "The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."
The bridge is a prayer worth memorizing: Spirit of God, lead me. Spirit of Christ, change me. Spirit so holy, fill me. And it adds a wise caution: Not just emotion, not just a feeling, not just a moment that passes away. The Spirit's work is not mainly about emotional highs. It is about lasting transformation into the likeness of Jesus.
If you have known about Jesus for years but never really seen Him, ask the Holy Spirit to remove the veil. That is a prayer He delights to answer.
A moment to respond: Read John 16:13–15. Then pray the song's bridge slowly: "Spirit of God, lead me. Spirit of Christ, change me. Spirit so holy, fill me." Ask Him to show you one truth about Jesus you have heard many times but never truly seen. Write down what He shows you.
Let's pray: Holy Spirit, turn our eyes to Jesus. Take away the veil. Don't let us only know about Him—make Him everything to us. Make our dead hearts beat and our blind eyes see. Lead us when we are tempted, strengthen us when we are afraid, and pray for us when we have no words. Fill us, change us, and glorify Jesus in us. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would move from knowing about Jesus to truly seeing Him—by the Spirit who loves to make Jesus known.
