Joy
Read together: Ecclesiastes 2:1–11; John 15:9–11; Psalm 4:6–8; John 14:6
Where have you looked for joy? Most of us have tried several places. Success. Relationships. Money. A new house, a new job, a new experience. Some of those things bring real happiness for a while. But then, as this song puts it, the happiness flickers like a candle in a windstorm—and goes out.
The singer searched everywhere: east and west, north and south. Fame, fortune, power, a name for himself. That ring was empty, and it just led me right back to the same. He asked the wisest people he knew, and they gave him more things to do. But things don't last—they just fade away fast.
That is one of the oldest stories in the world. Read Ecclesiastes 2:1–11. The Teacher—traditionally understood to be Solomon—says he tested pleasure, laughter, and wine. He built houses, planted vineyards, collected silver and gold, gathered singers and every delight. "I denied myself nothing my eyes desired." And then his verdict: "When I surveyed all that my hands had accomplished… everything was futile, a pursuit of the wind." The richest, wisest man of his age reached the same conclusion as this song.
Why do these things fail to satisfy? Because we were made for something more. The things of this world are gifts, but they were never meant to be the source of our deepest joy.
The second verse describes the turning point: a quiet voice from above: "If you want joy, first find My love." That is exactly what Jesus taught. Read John 15:9–11. "As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Remain in My love… I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you and your joy may be complete." Notice the order. Jesus does not say, "Find joy, and then you'll find Me." He says, "Remain in My love," and then His joy fills us. Joy is not something we chase directly. It is the overflow of being loved by Jesus.
The song also says this love can't be bought or achieved. It is received. I've found joy in Jesus—when His love and forgiveness in me I received. That is why the bridge calls salvation a gift—just believe and receive. We cannot earn our way into joy any more than we can earn our way into heaven.
Read Psalm 4:6–8. David notes that many people ask, "Who can show us any good?" Then he prays, "You have filled my heart with more joy than when their grain and new wine abound." The joy God gives is greater than the joy of a full harvest. It does not depend on circumstances.
That does not mean Christians are always smiling. Joy in Jesus can coexist with sorrow, grief, and pain. But it is deeper than they are. It rests on a love that does not fade.
The song ends by naming Jesus as the truth, the life, the way—echoing John 14:6. If you have been searching for joy in every direction, perhaps you have been looking the wrong way. Turn to Jesus. Receive His love and forgiveness. The joy you have been searching for has been waiting in Him all along.
A moment to respond: Make a list of places you have looked for joy. Next to each one, write how long the happiness lasted. Then read John 15:9–11 and ask Jesus to help you remain in His love today. Choose one simple way to do that—time in His Word, prayer, or worship.
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, we have searched for joy in so many places that left us empty. Forgive us for chasing the wind. Thank You that Your love is the source of lasting joy, and that it cannot be bought or earned—only received. Fill us with Your joy until it is complete. For anyone still searching, turn them toward You today. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would stop searching for joy in places that fade and find it forever in the love of Jesus.
