Lyrics
Jesus Made Something Outta Nothing In Me
Read together: Romans 4:17; Judges 6:11–16; 1 Samuel 16:6–13; Romans 5:6–8; Philippians 1:6
Have you ever felt like there must be more to life than what you can see? Or wondered how your life will turn out? Or quietly believed that you are nothing special—that if God looked at you, He wouldn't find much worth His attention?
This song speaks to that feeling. I'm not sure why anyone in me would see anything worth a try. And then it holds on to one thing it is sure of: God's love is very true and pure.
The idea of God making something out of nothing goes all the way back to creation. Read Romans 4:17. Paul describes God as the One "who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not." That is what God did in Genesis, speaking light into darkness. And it is what He does in human hearts.
Scripture is full of people who seemed like nothing until God called them. Read Judges 6:11–16. Gideon was hiding in a winepress, threshing wheat where enemies would not see him. The angel of the Lord greeted him, "The Lord is with you, mighty warrior." Gideon protested that his clan was the weakest and he was the least in his family. But God said, "I will be with you." The title "mighty warrior" did not describe what Gideon was. It described what God would make him.
Read 1 Samuel 16:6–13. When Samuel came to anoint a new king, Jesse paraded his older sons. David wasn't even invited—he was out tending sheep. But the Lord told Samuel, "Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." The overlooked youngest son became king.
The song's second verse reaches for the cross to explain God's love. Jesus sees in us something we have never seen. We want to be careful here. God does not love us because He spotted some hidden value that made us worth saving. Read Romans 5:6–8. Christ died for us "while we were still helpless… while we were still sinners." His love is not a response to our worth. It is the source of it. God does not love us because we are valuable; we become precious because He loves us. That is grace. And that is why the bridge is so beautiful: Lord, I was a nothing when You found me… You saw someone You loved with Your amazing grace.
The outro ends with hope: One day I'll know all I'm meant to be—but thank You, Lord, You're not finished with me. Read Philippians 1:6. God, who began a good work in you, will carry it on to completion. You are a work in progress, held in the hands of a faithful Creator.
Maybe you have been told you will never amount to anything. Maybe you have told yourself that. God's verdict is different. In Christ, you are loved, forgiven, and being made new. If you have not yet trusted Him, He invites you to come—not because you have something to offer, but because He has everything to give.
A moment to respond: Read Judges 6:11–16. Write down a name you have called yourself—"failure," "nobody," "not enough." Then cross it out, and beneath it write what God says about those who are in Christ: "loved," "forgiven," "His workmanship." Thank Him that He is not finished with you.
Let's pray: Lord, You call into being things that were not. Thank You for loving us when we were nothing and for sending Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners. Take what feels empty in us and make something new. Help us believe Your verdict over every voice that says we are worthless. Thank You that You are not finished with us yet. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would see yourself through the eyes of grace—and trust the God who makes something out of nothing.
