Lyrics

Verse 1## When the enemy gathers ’round you, And the world brings power to the fight, When fear rolls in like thunder, And your faith seems lost in the night. When the storm clouds hide the morning, And your hope is at a loss, Just remember there is power, In the shadow of His Cross. ##Chorus## There is hope, there is healing, There is power from on high. There is peace and victory, When His salvation draweth nigh. In the shelter of His mercy, He’s a strong mooring when tempest tossed He is the refuge everlasting, In the shadow of His Cross. ## Verse 2## For he who dwells in the secret place, Will find it’s where the Almighty abides. When the arrows of fear are flying, He will shield you and stand by your side. Though a thousand fall around you, And ten thousand pay the cost, You are safe in His presence, In the shadow of His Cross. ##Chorus## There is hope, there is healing, There is power from on high. There is peace and victory, When His salvation draweth nigh. In the shelter of His mercy, He’s a strong mooring when tempest tossed He is the refuge everlasting, In the shadow of His Cross. ##Bridge## For His angels they will surround you, They will guard you night and day. And the Lord, a strong defender, Will deliver when you pray. His love is set upon you— There’s no more battle or fear of loss, When you rest in full surrender, In the shadow of His Cross. ##Final Chorus (modulated)## There is hope, there is healing, There is power from on high! There is peace and sweet redemption, When His salvation draweth nigh. Lift your heart in pure thanksgiving, For the price He paid, the cost— There is joy and life eternal, In the shadow of His Cross. Ohhhhh, the price for our salvation, He’s paid all the cost! And we have joy and life eternal In the shadow of His cross.

In The Shadow Of His Cross

Read together: Psalm 91; Matthew 4:5–7; 1 Corinthians 1:18–25; Hebrews 2:14–15

There are seasons when it feels as if the enemy has surrounded you. Fear rolls in like thunder. Storm clouds hide the morning. Your faith seems lost in the night. This song speaks to that kind of season, and it points to one place of safety: the shadow of His cross.

Much of the song's language comes from Psalm 91. "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." The psalm promises that God will cover His people with His feathers, that they will not fear the terror of night or the arrow that flies by day, and that though a thousand may fall at their side, it will not come near them. God will command His angels to guard them. And the psalm ends with God's own voice: "Because he loves Me, I will deliver him… I will be with him in trouble."

That is a precious psalm, and it is meant to comfort God's people. But we must read it carefully. Read Matthew 4:5–7. When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he quoted Psalm 91—"He will command His angels concerning You"—and urged Jesus to throw Himself from the temple. Jesus refused: "Do not put the Lord your God to the test." Psalm 91 is not a guarantee that believers will never suffer harm. Faithful believers have been sick, persecuted, and even martyred. The psalm promises that nothing can ultimately separate God's people from His protection and that He is with them in trouble.

And that is where the cross comes in. Jesus Himself did not escape suffering. He walked straight into it. The "arrows" fell on Him. The thousand did not fall at His side—He bore the judgment for us. That is why the song does not simply say "in the shadow of the Almighty." It says in the shadow of His cross. Our deepest safety is not that bad things will never happen. It is that the worst thing—separation from God because of sin—has already been dealt with.

Read 1 Corinthians 1:18–25. "The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." The world looks at the cross and sees weakness. Faith looks at it and sees power: power to forgive, power to reconcile, power to defeat the enemy. Read Hebrews 2:14–15. Through His death, Jesus broke the power of the one who holds the power of death—the devil—and set free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

That is why the song can say, there's no more battle or fear of loss when you rest in full surrender. The battles of life still come. But the war has been won at Calvary. The enemy can frighten, but he cannot finally claim those who are hidden in Christ.

The chorus calls Jesus a strong mooring when tempest tossed. When you are being tossed by fear, tie yourself to Him. Rest in His shadow. Lift your heart in thanksgiving for the price He paid.

If you have never come to the cross, its shadow is open to you. Come to Jesus, trust what He did there, and find refuge.

A moment to respond: Read Psalm 91 aloud. Wherever it says "you," insert your name. Then read 1 Corinthians 1:18 and thank Jesus specifically for the power of the cross in your life. Name the fear that has been rolling in like thunder, and give it to Him.

Let's pray: Lord Jesus, when the enemy gathers around and fear rolls in, be our refuge. Thank You that You did not avoid suffering but bore it for us on the cross. Through Your death, You broke the power of the enemy. Shelter us in Your shadow. Be our strong mooring in the storm. We surrender to You, and we thank You for the price You paid. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would find rest and strength in the shadow of the cross, where Jesus has already won the victory.
