Lyrics
Have You Ever Changed Your Name
Have you ever wished you could leave a name behind? Maybe people still call you by a label from years ago: failure, troublemaker, unwanted, divorced, addict, disappointment. Sometimes a name can feel less like an identity and more like a sentence you have to serve.
Imagine Simon meeting Jesus. Simon was impulsive, bold, and sometimes terribly afraid. Jesus gave him the name Peter, meaning rock (John 1:42). Yet Peter later denied knowing the Lord three times. If a new name meant a person would never fail again, Peter's story would have ended there.
But read John 21:15–19. After His resurrection, Jesus met Peter again. He did not pretend the denial had never happened. He asked Peter about his love and entrusted him with responsibility to care for His sheep. The risen Savior restored a fallen disciple.
Does that sound like something you need to hear? Maybe someone else's judgment has become the voice in your head. Or maybe you've earned some of the criticism, and you're afraid the worst thing you did will always define you.
Scripture does not teach that following Jesus magically removes every consequence or changes our personalities overnight. It teaches something deeper: “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV). The foundation of a believer's identity is no longer merely the past, but belonging to Christ.
And there is one name above every name. Acts 4:12 declares that salvation is found in no one else but Jesus Christ. We don't save ourselves by adopting a new title. We are saved by trusting the Savior who died and rose again.
Would you be willing to bring the name that hurts most into prayer today? Tell the Lord what happened. Confess any sin honestly. Ask Him to help you believe what His Word says about those who are in Christ. If you've been calling someone else by their worst mistake, consider whether repentance and grace should change the way you speak to them, too.
Let's pray. Lord Jesus, You know the names others have called us and the names we have called ourselves. Where we have sinned, lead us to repentance. Where we carry shame that You have forgiven, teach us to walk in Your truth. Help us treat others as people who need Your mercy, just as we do. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you hear the name of Jesus above every accusing voice. We will be praying that His truth takes root in your heart.
