Lyrics

[Verse 1] By the back door, boots and shoes—maybe a fishing pole—by the step Coffee on low, the mornin' ain't up yet Mom hums low—Dad puts his plate on the mat. One more hard mile— Finding a way to still laugh—and smile. [Pre-Chorus] Hands get tired, but they always know— Love makes a home—and trusting Jesus as you go. [Chorus] Years and Years— Jesus kept them—carryin' on Jesus never left them— Even when night's were too long He preached—and she sang through the pain— Always together—until by death they weren’t— But now—ohhhh right now—they are forever—together—again. [Verse 2] Sunburnt from the garden— Weary from a long road— Dad carrying his Bible— Mom at home—carrying most of the load. Stubborn love and patience galore— You’d never see love—that worked more. Tiny dreams—came true— Four in all— But only three made it through. But that’s life—A life Jesus did control— And by His grace and mercy—He brought them through it all! [Pre-Chorus] In a world that long ago forgot what love is about— Mom, Dad and Jesus—ohhhh—they were all in love—ohhh—there was no doubt! [Chorus] Mom and Dad— Preacher and wife— It wasn’t perfect— But ohhhhh—what a life! Trusting in Jesus—guided everyday by His hand— Bound by love—far more than just a wedding band. Ohhhh—by God’s grace— They kept carrying on— Even when the night's—were sooooo long He preached—and she sang through the pain—Always together—until by death they weren’t— But now—ohhhh right now—they are forever—together—again. [Bridge] Time left its mark—on the old porch Boots, shoes, fishing poles—a basket of vegetables—or two— And alllllll—by God’s grace—that’s how they made it through— One stayed strong if the other felt defeat— I don’t think they ever ended a day—they didn’t lay it all—at Jesus’s feet! [Final Chorus] Mom and Dad— Now in heaven—still carrying on Both at His table— In sight of God’s throne. Forever together—each and every day— And one day—ours—and all God’s family will — Leaving behind every sorrow and pain— Ohhhhh what a day that’s gonna be—when we are all together—again!!

Forever Together Again

Read together: John 14:1–3; Psalm 116:15; John 11:25–26; 2 Corinthians 5:1–8; Revelation 19:6–9

Some homes are remembered by their sounds and smells. Coffee on low before sunrise. Boots by the back door. A fishing pole leaning against the step. A mother humming in the kitchen. This song opens with those kinds of pictures, and they carry the weight of a lifetime.

It is the story of a preacher and his wife—it wasn't perfect, but oh, what a life. He preached, and she sang through the pain. They worked hard, laughed through hard miles, and laid every day at Jesus' feet. They had four children, and only three made it through. And now, the song says, they are forever together again.

We do not want to say more about their lives than the song tells us. But many readers will recognize something of their own parents or grandparents here—ordinary, faithful people whose love was held together by trust in Jesus. And many will recognize the grief of losing them.

Read John 14:1–3. On the night before His death, Jesus told His disciples, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many rooms… I go to prepare a place for you… I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am." The heart of heaven is not first of all reunion with those we love—it is being with Jesus. But because believers are united to Him, they are united to one another in Him. Those who die in Christ are not lost. They are home.

Read Psalm 116:15. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." The passing of a faithful believer is not a small thing to God. He sees it, values it, and receives them.

This song also carries a quieter sorrow: a child who did not make it through. Perhaps that touches a wound in you. The song does not explain that loss, and neither will we. But it places it inside a life that Jesus did control, and inside a hope that reaches beyond the grave. Read John 11:25–26. Standing near the tomb of His friend Lazarus, Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies." Jesus wept there too. He does not dismiss grief. He overcomes death.

The final chorus pictures the parents both at His table, in sight of God's throne. Read Revelation 19:6–9. John hears a great multitude rejoicing and an angel declares, "Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb." The table of the Lord is the great family gathering of all who belong to Him. That is why the song can look forward: one day ours—and all God's family will.

If you are grieving parents who knew Jesus, take comfort. If you are unsure whether you will be part of that gathering, the invitation is open now. Trust Jesus, the resurrection and the life, and you will be welcomed at His table too.

A moment to respond: Think of someone whose faithful life pointed you to Jesus. Write down one habit of theirs—praying daily, singing through pain, laying the day at Jesus' feet—and ask God to help you carry it on. If you are grieving, read John 14:1–3 aloud and tell the Lord honestly how much you miss them.

Let's pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for faithful parents, grandparents, and friends who trusted You through long nights and hard miles. Comfort all who grieve them. Thank You that You are the resurrection and the life, and that those who die in You are at home with You. Keep us faithful until the day we gather at Your table. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that the faith of those who went before you would lead you to the same Savior—so that one day you will be together again in His presence.
