Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I’ve asked You to move mountains,
I’ve begged You to calm seas,
I’ve prayed a thousand desperate pleas
Lord, “take this thing from me.”
I’m down on bended knees
But maybe I just don’t know in the waiting,
There’s something I can’t see—
Maybe You’re not changing the battle—and where I am,
Maybe You’re just changing me.
[Pre-Chorus]
So if I walk through fire,
If this road is meant to be despair and it’s where I need to be—
Lord, I’m asking for one thing:
Don’t waste this just on me.
[Chorus]
Lord—don’t waste the pain—
Don’t let me miss Your Will again
Don’t let me hurt and stay the same.
Let all this go to glorify Your name
If I’m walking through the valley,
Don’t let anyone think You aren’t walking with me
If these tears are gonna fall,
Lord, get the glory through it all
And if You don’t take this trouble away
If I never live another day
Take from me what never looked like You
And my earnest prayer Lord—
Is don’t waste this—just on me.
[Verse 2]
I’ve called a blessing what are only things—here today and gone tomorrow
I’ve looked for the easy road—sometimes missing the value of sorrow
But I’ve learned some of Your greatest gifts You have for me
Come wrapped in darkest nights—when no light I could see
Because I never knew Your strength
Till mine was finally gone,
And I never knew how close You were
Till by myself—I couldn’t carry on.
[Pre-Chorus]
So Lord—I won’t tell You how to save me,
I won’t tell You what I need—
You see who I am right now,
Ohhhh—make of me—who I need to be!
[Chorus]
Lord—don’t waste the pain—
Don’t let me miss Your Will again
Don’t let me hurt and stay the same.
Let all this go to glorify Your name
If I’m walking through the valley,
Don’t let anyone think You aren’t walking with me
If these tears are gonna fall,
Lord, get the glory through it all
And if You don’t take this trouble away
If I never live another day
Take from me what never looked like You
And my earnest prayer Lord—
Is don’t waste this—just on me.
[Bridge — building]
Take my pride—
Take my fear—
Take whatever keeps You
From drawing near.
Take my anger—
Take control—
Take every locked-up room
Inside my soul.
And if the answer
Isn’t what I prayed it would be—
Then make me more like Jesus
Through how You make me trust in Thee!
[Breakdown]
Lord I wanted You to change my situation—
You wanted to change me in my situation—
I wanted the road to be easier
You wanted to make my faith stronger.
I thought the flames were gonna consume me—I didn’t know beside me in the flames—is exactly where You would be!
[Final Chorus — full release]
Just don’t waste this pain on me,
Don’t let me leave here still the same.
In every thing I suffer and do
I wanna give all the glory and honor to You
If You lead me through the valley,
I wanna shout Your name for eternity
And if these tears continue to fall
I’ll give You praise through it all
For what I thought would surely break me
Was the very thing that made me see what I needed to see
Ohhh—
That I don’t have to understand it,
I just have to believe—and trust in You
And Whatever You’re doing, Jesus,
Don’t waste it just on me.
[Tag]
If You change my circumstance—
I’ll praise You.
If You change me instead—
I’ll praise You.
Either way—
When this is over,
Let there be more of You
And less of me.3f:["$","$L4f",null,{"clip":{"status":"complete","title":"Don't Waste This on Me","play_count":2,"upvote_count":0,"allow_comments":true,"is_verified":false,"id":"48d10d38-41ca-47ce-b8a9-e699f5a67f29","entity_type":"song_schema","video_url":"https://cdn1.suno.ai/48d10d38-41ca-47ce-b8a9-e699f5a67f29.mp4","audio_url":"https://studio-api.prod.suno.com/api/forbidden","media_urls":[{"url":"https://d2lwuy8qc234o3.cloudfront.net/1/clip/48d10d38-41ca-47ce-b8a9-e699f5a67f29.m4a","content_type":"m4a-opus","delivery":"progressive","encoding":"1.0.0"},{"url":"https://cdn1.suno.ai/48d10d38-41ca-47ce-b8a9-e699f5a67f29.mp3","content_type":"mp3","delivery":"progressive"}],"image_url":"https://cdn2.suno.ai/image_48d10d38-41ca-47ce-b8a9-e699f5a67f29.jpeg","image_large_url":"https://cdn2.suno.ai/image_large_48d10d38-41ca-47ce-b8a9-e699f5a67f29.jpeg","major_model_version":"v5.5","model_name":"chirp-fenix","metadata":{"tags":"Iconic 70’s male folk singer; folk rock; raspy, disjointed, slightly off rhythm and not entirely predictable. Don't Waste This Just On Me
Lyric note: Corrected lyrics supplied by owner; archive lyric file was garbled.
Read together: 2 Corinthians 1:3–7; Daniel 3:13–28; Romans 5:1–5; John 3:30; 1 Peter 4:12–13
Have you ever prayed the same prayer so many times that the words feel worn thin? Lord, take this thing from me. You have begged for the mountain to move and the sea to calm. And it hasn't. Not yet, anyway.
This song begins there, on bended knees, and then asks a different question. Maybe You're not changing the battle. Maybe You're just changing me. That is not a tidy answer to suffering, and the song does not treat it as one. But it opens the door to a prayer few of us think to pray: Lord, don't waste this just on me.
Read 2 Corinthians 1:3–7. Paul calls God "the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God." Paul did not view his suffering as a private event. It became a channel through which God's comfort could reach others. That is the heart of this song. The pain is real, but it does not have to end with you.
The breakdown in the song is honest and searching: I wanted You to change my situation—You wanted to change me in my situation… I wanted You to take me out of the fiery furnace… but You wanted to sit with me in the flames, for Your honor, glory, and perfect will. That last line points to one of the most dramatic scenes in the Old Testament. Read Daniel 3:13–28. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego told the king that their God was able to rescue them, "but even if He does not," they would not bow to the idol. They were thrown into the furnace—and the king saw four men walking in the fire, unharmed. God did not keep them out of the flames. He met them in the flames.
We cannot promise that the fire will not touch you. Scripture does not make that promise. But it does promise that believers will not walk through it alone, and that God is able to use even suffering for good. Read Romans 5:1–5. Paul says we rejoice in our sufferings because suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope—and that hope does not disappoint, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.
The bridge is a prayer of surrender: Take my pride, take my fear, take my anger, take control, take every locked-up room inside my soul. That kind of prayer is costly. It means letting God reach places we have kept closed. And the song's final line sums up the goal: Let there be more of You and less of me. John the Baptist said it first: "He must increase; I must decrease" (John 3:30).
If you are in a long season of pain, please hear this gently: you do not have to pretend it is good. You do not have to understand it. As the song says, I don't have to understand it, I just have to believe. And if you need help—medical, emotional, or practical—seeking it is not a lack of faith.
A moment to respond: Read 2 Corinthians 1:3–7. Ask the Lord to show you one person who is walking through something similar to what you have faced. Reach out to them this week with a word of comfort, a meal, or a simple "I've been there too."
Let's pray: Lord, You know the prayers we have prayed again and again. If You change our circumstances, we will praise You. If You change us instead, we will praise You. Take our pride, our fear, our anger, and every locked room in our souls. Comfort us, and let that comfort flow through us to others. Don't waste this just on me. Let there be more of You and less of me. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that no tear you cry would be wasted—that the comfort God gives you would become comfort for someone else.
