Lyrics
Come Unto Me
Read together: Psalm 141:2; Revelation 8:3–4; Hebrews 4:14–16; Romans 5:1–2; Psalm 139:1–4; Exodus 3:5; Matthew 11:28–30; Psalm 18:2; Psalm 139:7–10; Romans 8:38–39; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20
Sometimes prayer feels like words spoken into an empty room. We wonder if anyone is listening, or whether our troubles are too small, or too big, to bring to God. Scripture gives us a very different picture of what happens when a child of God prays.
Read Psalm 141:2. David prayed, “May my prayer be set before You like incense, my uplifted hands like the evening offering.” Read Revelation 8:3–4. John saw that picture in heaven: “the smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, rose up before God.” Like mist rising from the water, our prayers do not vanish. They rise, and they reach the Lord.
But how can sinful people come near a holy God? Read Hebrews 4:14–16. We have “a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God.” He understands our weakness, and because of Him we can “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Read Romans 5:1–2. “Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand.” We are not welcome because we earned it. We are welcome because Jesus paid for our sin.
And the One we come to already knows us. Read Psalm 139:1–4. “O LORD, You have searched me and known me… Even before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it.” Nothing we bring will surprise Him. Read Exodus 3:5. When God met Moses, He said, “The place where you are standing is holy ground.” His presence is holy, and through Jesus we are invited to stand there.
What does the Lord say to us there? Read Matthew 11:28–30. “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest… For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Jesus does not wait for us to fix ourselves first. He calls the tired and the heavy-laden just as they are.
His welcome also holds us fast. Read Psalm 18:2 and Psalm 139:7–10. “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.” There is nowhere we could go where He is not, for “even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.” Read Romans 8:38–39. Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Read 1 Corinthians 6:19–20. “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” The One who paid that price lives in every believer, and He is not going anywhere.
A moment to respond: Read Matthew 11:28–30 slowly. Then take ten quiet minutes today and bring the Lord the one burden you have been carrying alone. Tell Him plainly, the way a child talks to a father, and leave it at His feet. If you have never come to Jesus, His invitation is for you too: come to Him just as you are.
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, thank You that our prayers rise to You and never fall to the ground. Thank You that by Your blood we can come boldly to the throne of grace. You know every part of us, inside and out, and still You call us by name. We bring You our burdens and our fears. Give us Your rest, and hold us fast in Your love, from which nothing can separate us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that every weary heart would hear Jesus say, “Come unto Me,” and find in His presence the rest, mercy and grace that only He can give.
