Worship the Lamb
When Worship Begins at the Cross
Sometimes we come to worship carrying a list of things we need God to change. A loved one is suffering. A door has closed. An answer has not come. We may sing with sincere hearts, yet find that our attention keeps returning to what is missing, unresolved, or frightening. There is nothing wrong with bringing those burdens to the Lord. Scripture invites us to do exactly that. But worship also calls us to lift our eyes beyond the immediate circumstances and behold the One who is worthy even before anything around us changes.
The book of Revelation gives us a remarkable picture. In Revelation 5, John sees a scroll that no one in heaven or on earth is worthy to open. He begins to weep. Then he is told to look: the Lion of the tribe of Judah has triumphed. What John sees is a Lamb standing as though slain. Heaven's answer to the deepest crisis is Jesus Christ, crucified and risen. His victory is not separated from His sacrifice; His sacrifice is the very heart of His victory.
That is why Christian worship is more than admiration for a powerful God. We worship the Savior who came willingly, lived without sin, and gave Himself for people who could never purchase their own redemption. Revelation 5:9 declares that the Lamb is worthy because He was slain and purchased people for God by His blood. The song of heaven is rooted in what Jesus has done.
Consider the difference that makes when you stand before God. If your acceptance depended on the quality of your performance, worship would always be mixed with dread. Did you pray enough? Serve enough? Overcome enough? But Hebrews 10:19–22 points believers to confidence in approaching God through the blood of Jesus. We do not enter because we have earned our place. We come because Christ has opened the way.
This is not permission to treat holiness lightly. It is the reason to pursue holiness with gratitude rather than terror. The One who saves us also calls us to belong to Him. When we sing, “Holy,” we are not simply repeating a beautiful word. We are acknowledging that Jesus is unlike every rival claim on our hearts. When we sing, “Worthy,” we confess that no achievement, possession, or human applause deserves the place that belongs to Him.
Perhaps today you cannot sing loudly. Grief has made your voice thin. Weariness has made your thoughts scattered. Worship does not require pretending that you feel strong. You can begin with one honest sentence: “Jesus, You are worthy.” You can thank Him for the cross. You can remember the empty tomb. You can bring your sorrow into His presence without making sorrow the final word.
And perhaps you have never trusted Christ at all. The Lamb is not merely a figure to admire from a distance. The gospel invites you to repent and believe in Him. His death and resurrection are not just events to remember; they are the ground of the salvation He offers.
At UnrelentingJesus, our desire is that every song of praise lead beyond the music to the living Savior. We want you to see His glory, receive His mercy, and discover that the deepest reason for worship is not what we have brought to God, but what God has given us in His Son.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, Lamb of God, You alone are worthy of honor and praise. Forgive me for measuring Your goodness only by my circumstances. Turn my heart again to Your cross and resurrection. Receive my gratitude, my burdens, and my life. Teach me to worship You in truth, with joy and reverence, today and forever. Amen.
