Lyrics
What Greater Love
Read together: John 6:26–35; Mark 9:17–27; Romans 8:31–32; 1 John 4:9–10
Have you ever thought, "If God would just do one more thing, then I would believe"? One more answered prayer. One more sign. One more miracle. This song imagines God asking a question of His own: What greater love, what other task must I sacrifice or do to convince the heart of man My word and love is true?
The second verse lists what we might ask for: every blind person given sight, every dream made reality, every sickness cured, no pain to endure. Wouldn't that be enough to convince everyone?
The Gospels suggest it would not. Read John 6:26–35. The day after Jesus fed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish, the crowd came looking for Him. Jesus said, "You are looking for Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled." They asked Him for another sign: "What sign then do You do, that we may see and believe You?" They had just witnessed a miracle, and they wanted more. Jesus answered, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me shall not hunger."
Miracles alone do not produce faith. The human heart can always ask for one more.
The chorus gives God's answer: What greater love could be shown to man than You've already loved through salvation's plan? Read Romans 8:31–32. "He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?" God has already given His greatest gift. There is nothing more costly He could do to prove His love. The cross is the final word on whether God loves us.
The third verse turns personal, and painfully honest. Lord, how can the world—no, Lord, really, it's sometimes me—I don't want to trust what I cannot see. Doubt is not only a problem for unbelievers. Believers struggle too. Read Mark 9:17–27. A desperate father brought his tormented son to Jesus and said, "If You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us." Jesus answered, "'If You can'? All things are possible for one who believes." And the father cried out, "I believe; help my unbelief!" Jesus did not reject him. He healed the boy.
That prayer—help my unbelief—is one of the most honest prayers in the Bible, and the song makes it its own.
The bridge makes a wise distinction: Lord, I don't need another miracle today. I need to from doubt and my sin just turn away. And it asks the hardest question: what would it profit us if every person were healed and all the riches of the world were gained, but we lost our souls by missing salvation's plan? The greatest miracle is not a healed body. It is a saved soul.
Read 1 John 4:9–10. "This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." If you are waiting for God to prove His love, look at the cross. He already has.
A moment to respond: Read Mark 9:24 and pray it honestly: "I believe; help my unbelief." Name one doubt you have been carrying. Then read Romans 8:32 and let it answer that doubt. If you have never trusted Jesus, don't wait for another sign. The cross is enough.
Let's pray: Lord, You have already shown us the greatest love possible by giving Your own Son. Forgive us for asking for more signs when You have given us the cross. We believe—help our unbelief. Turn us from doubt and sin. Thank You that the greatest miracle is a soul saved by Your grace. Keep us believing until the day You receive us. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would stop waiting for one more sign—and see that God has already shown you the greatest love of all.
