Lyrics

[Verse 1] Have you ever prepared for a day Believing it’s gonna be a war all the way Have you ever gotten up with the sun Wishing you could undo—what’s already been done? Have you ever had to make a plan Knowing how hard it will be to get back home—again? Have you ever started out in defeat Before the ground ever felt your feet? [Verse 2] Every warrior needs a battle plan built for success Most wars are won—by who has prepared the best Sometimes it’s about power Sometimes it’s the strategy or hour Sometimes it’s how much when into the thought Sometimes it’s about how the battle will be fought [Chorus] But in Heaven—the war is already won Ohhh—in Heaven, the victor is God’s only Son And every day—when you gear up for the fight Just know Jesus already won the war by His power and might And if every day the fight you want to win— It’s by total surrender—and you’ll beat the enemy again and again. [Verse 3] For many, surrender is no strategy at all For many—when there’s a fight—you just answer the call But as a believer—the greatest enemy isn’t temptation and sin Noooo—the fiercest fight you’ll ever win—is against ourselves—the worst enemy among men—the old man still living within. [Chorus] But in Heaven—the war is already won Ohhh—in Heaven, the victor is God’s only Son And every day—when you gear up for the fight Just know Jesus already won the war by His power and might And if every day the fight you want to win— It’s by total surrender—and you’ll beat the enemy again and again. [Bridge] Come now—surrender—and the victory is sure Come now—the war is won and the prize is secure. Come battle worn and with every scar Come now—come just as you are— Come now to Jesus—and find your forgiveness and rest Come now to Jesus—our mighty conquerer—and Heaven’s best. [Tag] Ohhhhh—in Heaven—the war—is already won Ohhh—in Heaven—the victor—is God’s only Son And every day—before you gear up for the fight Just know Jesus already won the war by His power and might And if every day the fight you want to win— It’s by total surrender—and you’ll beat the enemy again and again.

The War Is Already Won

Read together: John 16:33; 1 John 5:4–5; Galatians 5:16–25; Romans 6:12–14

Have you ever woken up already braced for a battle? Before your feet hit the floor, you feel defeated. You wish you could undo what has already been done. You know the day ahead will be a fight all the way. This song begins there, with a series of questions many of us could answer yes to.

The second verse describes how wars are usually won: power, strategy, timing, preparation. Most wars are won by who has prepared the best. That is how the world thinks about battles. But then the chorus changes the whole picture: In heaven, the war is already won—the victor is God's only Son.

Read John 16:33. On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus told His disciples, "In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Notice that He spoke those words before the cross, as if the victory were already certain. And it was. The disciples would face trouble—persecution, prison, even martyrdom. But the outcome of the war was settled.

Read 1 John 5:4–5. "Everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God." Victory for the believer is not something we achieve by superior strategy. It is something we share by faith in the Victor.

The song then makes a surprising claim about strategy: If every day the fight you want to win—it's by total surrender. In every earthly war, surrender means defeat. In the Christian life, surrender to Jesus is the path to victory. Read Romans 6:12–14. Paul tells believers not to let sin reign in their bodies, but to "present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life… For sin shall no longer be your master." The key word is present—yielding ourselves to God. We do not win by gritting our teeth. We win by giving ourselves to the One who has already won.

The third verse names the hardest enemy: The fiercest fight you'll ever win is against ourselves—the worst enemy among men—the old man still living within. Read Galatians 5:16–25. Paul describes the war between the flesh and the Spirit: "The flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh." He lists the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. Then he says, "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit." The battle with ourselves is real. But it is fought from victory, not for it.

The bridge is an invitation to anyone who is battle-worn: Come now—surrender—and the victory is sure. Come battle-worn and with every scar. Come now, come just as you are… and find your forgiveness and rest. You do not have to clean up before you come. You come wounded, and Jesus gives rest.

If you have been fighting in your own strength and losing, stop. Lay down your weapons. Surrender to Jesus. The war is already won.

A moment to respond: Read Galatians 5:16–25. Identify one "work of the flesh" you keep fighting against. Instead of resolving to try harder, pray a prayer of surrender: "Lord, I present this to You. Walk with me in Your Spirit today." Then name one fruit of the Spirit you will ask Him to grow in you this week.

Let's pray: Lord Jesus, You have overcome the world. The war is already won, and You are the Victor. Forgive us for fighting in our own strength. We surrender to You. Help us walk by the Spirit and not gratify the desires of the flesh. For anyone battle-worn today, give them forgiveness and rest. Amen.

Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would stop fighting for victory and start living from it—by total surrender to the Jesus who has already won.
