Lyrics
More Than Savior
Read together: Colossians 3:1–4; John 15:4–5; 2 Corinthians 4:16–18; 2 Timothy 4:17–18
When you think of Jesus, what word comes to mind first? For many believers, the answer is Savior—and rightly so. He saved us from sin, from death, and from God's judgment. But this song says something more: Jesus, You are more than Savior to me.
The verses trace a journey from one condition to another. Up from the depths of sin into hope and peace. Out of darkness into His glory. From loneliness and fear to a companion always near. From tattered and torn to transformed and washed. From hopelessness to being held in His hands. From a life without purpose to a life where Jesus is the gain.
That is not only salvation from something. It is salvation into something—a new life with Jesus at the center.
Read Colossians 3:1–4. Paul says that if you have been raised with Christ, you should set your hearts and minds on things above, "for you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory." Notice that phrase: Christ, who is your life. Not just your Savior, but your life.
The chorus says, You live within, making of me what I can be. Read John 15:4–5. Jesus said, "Remain in Me, and I will remain in you… I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing." Jesus does not save us and then leave us to figure out the rest. He lives in us by His Spirit, and our whole growth flows from staying connected to Him.
The song names Him as companion—always near. For anyone who has known loneliness, that is precious. Jesus is not a distant rescuer who pulled you from a fire and drove away. He stays. He walks with you. He gives strength for each day to finish my race.
The third verse borrows Paul's words: I've lost it all for sweet Jesus to be my gain. Paul said that whatever he had once counted as gain, he now considered loss for the sake of Christ (Philippians 3:7–8). When Jesus becomes your life, other things lose their grip.
The fourth verse looks toward death. When death knocks at my door, salvation answers—takes me home with You forevermore. What a picture. Read 2 Timothy 4:17–18. Near the end of his life, abandoned by many, Paul wrote, "The Lord stood with me and strengthened me… The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory forever and ever." Paul expected to die soon. Yet he called it rescue.
Read 2 Corinthians 4:16–18. "Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day." Our present troubles are light and momentary compared to the eternal glory being prepared for us. That is why the bridge can celebrate being secured by Your sacrifice… saved by grace and mercy alone, not of myself.
If you know Jesus only as the One who saved you once, ask Him to become more than that—your companion, your strength, your life. And if you have not yet received Him as Savior, start there. He will not stop at saving you.
A moment to respond: Read Colossians 3:1–4 and John 15:4–5. Then make a list: "Jesus, You are my ___." Fill in as many words as you can from your own experience—Savior, Friend, Strength, Companion, Hope. Thank Him for each one.
Let's pray: Jesus, You are more than Savior to us. You lifted us from sin, darkness, loneliness, and fear. You live within us, making us what we could never be on our own. Be our companion, our strength, and our life. When death knocks, let salvation answer and bring us home. Glory to Your name forever. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would know Jesus not only as the One who saved you, but as the One who is your very life.
