Jesus
Read together: Matthew 1:20–23; Isaiah 9:6–7; John 1:29; Revelation 19:11–16; Acts 1:9–11
Some songs need many words. This one needs only one, repeated over and over: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. And then it fills that name with meaning: Counselor, Provider, Friend. Savior, Spotless Lamb, Risen One. King of Kings, Holy One, the One who is coming again.
Where did this name come from? Read Matthew 1:20–23. An angel appeared to Joseph and told him that Mary would give birth to a son, "and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." The name Jesus—Yeshua in Hebrew—means "the Lord saves." Every time we speak His name, we are declaring what He came to do.
The second verse calls Him Counselor, Provider, and Friend. Read Isaiah 9:6–7. Centuries before His birth, Isaiah prophesied that a child would be born who would be called "Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace," and of His government and peace there would be no end. When you need wisdom, He is the Counselor. When you are in need, He knows what you lack. When you are alone, He is the Friend who stays by your side until the very end.
The third verse calls Him Savior, the Spotless Lamb, the Risen One. Read John 1:29. When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming, he cried out, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" Jesus was without sin, yet He bore our sin. He died, and He rose again. That is what makes Him unique among every religious leader who has ever lived.
The fourth verse calls Him the King of Kings, the Holy One, the One who is coming again. Read Revelation 19:11–16. John saw heaven opened and a rider on a white horse called Faithful and True. On His robe and thigh was written: "King of kings and Lord of lords." And Acts 1:9–11 records that after Jesus ascended, two angels told the disciples, "This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go." The One who came as a baby will return as King.
That is why the chorus calls us to worship. Right now, lift your hands and worship Jesus… bow in your heart and thank Him for saving your soul and making you whole. When we understand who Jesus is, worship is the only reasonable response.
The bridge turns to anyone who has not yet met Him. If you've never met Jesus—all will one day come to an end—unless you know Jesus. That is not a threat. It is a loving warning. Everything in this world is temporary. Only those who know Jesus will live forever with Him.
And the tag ends with an open invitation: Come now, come right now, just like you are. Jesus still forgives, because Jesus still lives. And Jesus still saves the lost.
A moment to respond: Take each title from this song—Counselor, Provider, Friend, Savior, Lamb, Risen One, King, Holy One, Coming King—and spend a moment thanking Jesus for being each one to you. Which one do you most need today? Tell Him.
Let's pray: Jesus, Your name means "the Lord saves," and You have saved us. You are our Counselor, Provider, and Friend; our Savior, the spotless Lamb, and the risen One; the King of Kings who is coming again. We lift our hands and worship You. For anyone who has never met You, draw them to come right now, just as they are. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that the name of Jesus would become the sweetest name you know—because He is everything that name promises.
