Lyrics
Jesus’ Love
Read together: Proverbs 17:17; Proverbs 18:24; 1 Samuel 18:1–4; John 15:12–15; Matthew 6:12–15
Think about your closest friends—not the people you know casually, but the ones who are heart bound, as this song puts it. The ones who stay in your heart no matter where life takes you. Some are still nearby. Others live far away. Some have already gone home to be with the Lord. But they are still part of you.
This song is a thank-you for those friendships, and for the greater Friend behind them. There is no other friend who loves us so… no greater love than Jesus' love. But once in a while, He smiles from heaven and sends a friend—one like Jesus, who loves you till the very end.
Read Proverbs 17:17. "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity." And Proverbs 18:24 says, "There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." Scripture places a high value on faithful friendship. It is one of God's good gifts.
The Bible gives us a picture of that kind of friendship. Read 1 Samuel 18:1–4. Jonathan, the king's son, loved David "as his own soul." He gave David his robe, his armor, his sword, and his bow—symbols of his own royal position. Later, Jonathan risked his life to protect David from his father's anger. That is the kind of friend who loves until the very end.
But even the best human friend points to a greater one. Read John 15:12–15. Jesus said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command." Then He said something astonishing: "I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends." The Lord of glory offers friendship to sinners. And He proved that friendship by laying down His life.
The second verse is tender and honest. If I knew how to fix the trouble that comes to a friend, I'd fix it over and over again. Many of us know that helpless feeling. We cannot fix every problem for those we love. But we can stay. We can pray. We can be present. Sometimes that is the greatest gift a friend can give.
The bridge turns to something every friendship needs: forgiveness. To be more like Jesus… the only One who forgives no matter what we've done… He's taught us all to forgive our enemies. Read Matthew 6:12–15. Jesus taught us to pray, "Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." Then He added that if we do not forgive others, the Father will not forgive us. That is not because our forgiveness earns God's forgiveness. It is because a heart that has truly received mercy cannot keep withholding it. Friendships survive on forgiveness. So does every relationship with God.
If you have friends like the ones in this song, thank God for them—and tell them what they mean to you. If you feel friendless right now, know that Jesus calls you His friend, and ask Him to send you godly companions. And if you have never received His friendship, it begins with trusting the One who laid down His life for you.
A moment to respond: Write a short message today to a friend who has loved you through hard times. Tell them specifically what their friendship has meant. Then ask: Is there a friend I need to forgive, or ask forgiveness from? Take one step toward that this week.
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Friend who laid down Your life for us. Thank You for the friends You have sent who reflect Your love. Bless them and keep them. Help us to love at all times, to stay when we cannot fix things, and to forgive as You forgive. For anyone who feels alone, send faithful friends, and let them know You call them friend. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would know Jesus as your truest Friend—and that His love would make you a faithful friend to others.
