Lyrics
Faith Came Through A Roof
Read together: Luke 5:17–26; Galatians 6:2; Hebrews 11:6; Romans 10:17
What would Jesus do if He came to your house today? What would you ask Him for? Would your town lift Him up or shout Him down? This song opens with questions that bring an old story right to our front door.
Read Luke 5:17–26. Jesus was teaching in a house so crowded that no one else could get in. Pharisees and teachers of the law had come from every village to listen. Then some men arrived carrying a paralyzed friend on a mat. When they could not get through the crowd, they went up on the roof, removed the tiles, and lowered him right in front of Jesus.
Picture the scene. Dust falling. People looking up. A man on a mat descending into the middle of a theological discussion. And Luke tells us exactly what Jesus noticed: "When Jesus saw their faith." Not only the paralyzed man's faith—the faith of his friends. They could not heal him, but they could carry him. They could not forgive him, but they could get him to the One who could.
The song captures this beautifully: not four men who didn't want to go in—they only wanted Jesus to heal their friend. Those friends did not care about getting a good seat. They cared about getting their friend to Jesus. Read Galatians 6:2. "Carry one another's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Sometimes faith looks like carrying someone who cannot carry themselves.
Then comes the surprise. Jesus did not first say, "Get up and walk." He said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven." The religious leaders were offended: who can forgive sins but God alone? And that was precisely the point. Jesus healed the man's body to prove that He had authority to heal the man's soul. The deepest need in that room was not paralysis. It was sin. The same is true for every one of us.
The man got up, picked up his mat, and went home praising God. He came in on his back and walked out on his feet.
The song asks a direct question: What reason can be found in your heart not to believe that Jesus can forgive and heal you? We want to answer that carefully. Jesus has all authority to forgive every sin that is brought to Him in faith. He also has power to heal bodies, though He does not always choose to do so in this life, and we will not promise that He will heal every illness. But no one who comes to Him for forgiveness is turned away. Romans 10:17 says faith comes from hearing the message about Christ. If you are hearing it now, faith can find its way to you.
And maybe you are one of the friends. Someone you love is paralyzed by fear, grief, addiction, or unbelief. You cannot fix them. But you can carry them—in prayer, in presence, and by bringing them to the place where Jesus is.
A moment to respond: Write down the name of one person you want to "carry" to Jesus. Pray for them every day this week, and look for one practical way to help them—a ride, a meal, an invitation. If you are the one who needs carrying, let someone you trust know.
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, thank You that no roof, crowd, or obstacle can keep faith from reaching You. Forgive our sins, the way You forgave the man on the mat. Give us friends who will carry us when we cannot walk, and make us friends who will carry others to You. Let faith find its way into every heart that hears Your name today. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would let faith break through whatever stands between you and Jesus—and that you would carry someone else to Him too.
