Lyrics
Bless The Name Of The Lord
Read together: Numbers 6:22–27; Psalm 103:1–14; Psalm 4:8; 2 Peter 3:8–9
When was the last time someone spoke a blessing over you? Not a casual "bless you" after a sneeze, but a sincere prayer asking God's favor, mercy, and peace to rest on your life. Many of us go years without hearing those words.
This song is different from most worship songs. Before it lifts praise to God, it speaks a blessing to you: may the Lord's eyes and favor be upon you; may His mercy fall like rain on your head; may every road lead you in His way as you seek Him each day; may His peace comfort your troubled heart; may you lie down at night knowing deep in your soul that He cares for you.
That kind of blessing has deep roots. Read Numbers 6:22–27. God instructed Aaron and his sons to bless the people with these words: "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up His countenance toward you and give you peace." Then God added, "So they shall put My name on the Israelites, and I will bless them." Blessing is not wishful thinking. It is God's chosen way of reminding His people that His name is upon them and His favor is toward them.
The pre-chorus offers a line worth slowing down for: the Lord knows our frame and our every need. Read Psalm 103:13–14. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him, for He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. God is not surprised by your weakness. He knows exactly what you are made of, and He is compassionate toward it.
The song also says the Lord is not slack in His thoughts toward us. That phrase comes from 2 Peter 3:9, where Peter says the Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness, but is patient, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. What may look like delay is actually mercy. God is giving people time to turn to Him. If you have not yet trusted Christ, that patience is meant for you.
The chorus then turns blessing into worship. Bless the name of the only One who for every sin did atone. We can receive God's blessing because Jesus bore our shame and paid sin's debt at Calvary. Every good thing God gives His people flows through the cross. The third verse says it plainly: sin's debt is paid through faith for you and me.
Perhaps you are going to bed tonight with a troubled heart. You may be lying awake with worry, replaying conversations, or dreading tomorrow. Read Psalm 4:8. "I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." Rest is not only physical. It is the deep assurance that you are held by the One who never sleeps.
A moment to respond: Read Numbers 6:24–26 aloud—first over yourself, then over someone you love. Consider writing it in a card or text message and sending it to a person who needs encouragement today. Tonight, before you sleep, read Psalm 103:1–5 and thank God for each benefit it lists.
Let's pray: Lord, bless the one reading this and keep them. Make Your face shine upon them and be gracious to them. Lift up Your countenance upon them and give them peace. You know our frame and our every need. Thank You for Jesus, who atoned for our sin and bore our shame. We bless Your name, now and forever. Amen.
Our desire at UnrelentingJesus is that you would go to sleep tonight knowing the Lord's name is upon you, and that His care reaches the deepest part of your soul.
